Auto or manual?

When I can't get it into 1st, that tells me I should probably let the whole car sit let it warm up for another 30 seconds.

Those are really fun mornings....

...

..

.

Once it goes into gear, I short shift around 2K.

I'd agree that 3-4k seems safe.

manual. what do you mean, when you cant get it into first? like, it physically won't let you shift the gear? i don't think i've experienced anything like that before.

I'd say about 4,156 and a half RPM or so.

Aye. When its cold, you can push with a good deal of effort, but it won't enter the gate.

The work around is to take it back to neutral, angle it over so it is facing 1st, grip the shifter with everything you have, then push back against the seat and thrust your hand forward - obviously not good for the synchros, but that puts it into 1st.

This typically happens when under 40 degrees.

..or you can just put it into 2nd first and then go into 1st, should slide in like butter each time even while cold..

I've tried this. This hasn't helped for cold starts. Interestingly, on hot days I've run into this same problem where after 15 minutes on the interstate, I get to a stop light, and it won't go back into 1st.

Now, in the situation where it's too hot, going to 2nd then 1st, typically it halfway gets into gear (triple synchros right?), then I go back to 2nd and then it goes into 1st. But you feel it tunk-thunk into gear.

The answer is new fluids, probably. Dunno what or if Toyota changed anything for after the 2013 MY.

personally I have never had such an issue going into 2nd then 1st. maybe you are rushing the throw a little too quickly? the synchros don't like to be rushed when cold or else it feels kinda notchy/clunky

Yep, story time. My MGB was a screamer ....... or maybe it was the mother of my second child that was doing the screaming .......

About 8:00 PM on evening in Danville, CA, after a big meal (and that's another story), my pregnant wife (who was scheduled for a cesarean section in two weeks, decided to go into big time labor.

So, I tossed number one son to a neighbor and fired up my MGB to head for the hospital in Los Gatos (about 45 miles away) (mostly freeway).

With horn blaring and lights flashing, my MGB screamed out of Danville, down the freeway, all the way through San Jose ....... looking for a police escort ...... none to be found and slid sideways into the hospital parking lot.

While waiting in the waiting room, I calculated my average speed had been a tad over 105 MPH.

Later, while returning to Danville, my police escort found me ........ going 80 MPH on a 65MPH highway. Yep, he gave me a speeding ticket......the CHP are mean bastards ......

Yep, between my wife and the MG ...... there was a lot of screaming going on. I found out later, the baby had its umbilical cord wrapped around it neck ....... and wanted the hell outta there .....

THE END

Ya know, mazeroni, I reckon there is something wrong with your car's transmission.

I have a 2013 FR-S, MT with about 20,000 miles on it, with original transmission fluid.

Every Thursday evening I have to move it up a couple of feet in my garage to be able to get the recycle bin out.

I get the door barely open, reach in and pull the shift lever, with two fingers, out of 1st gear into neutral (I leave it in 1st when parked).

I then push the car forward, remove the recycle bin and push the car back to where it was.

Then, reaching in the car, I push the shift lever from neutral into first gear ..... using just three fingers.

Why is yours so different ......

MGBs will scream if set up right. Growing up, we lived 3/4 of a mile from the interstate. On very quiet evenings, we could hear my dad downshift on the off ramp and grow progressively louder as he roared up the hill. We'd even get a warning we were about to hear it because the dog would jump up and run to the garage door right before we heard the engine braking. Even the 6 cylinder in my Triumph blowing through a Cherry Bomb wasn't as loud.

Damn all the gains seems humfr hasn't lost his game yet.

I wonder if Tcoat do the same

OH ya Op, our car's transmission is build with a bit tighter tolerance....... so........ I would suggest you change to motul gear 300 if the problem persist. For like a month I couldn't shift into 2nd while going to work in the morning.... Fun time indeed.
