The 17's filter (and whole intake) is much larger than the prior ones.
Wait... For the 17 they went to a paper filter for better flow? I've been doing it wrong this whole time!

Alright, I need some clarification. Are you guys saying there are two kinds of TRD air filters? One for the TRD air box and one for the normal air box (stock replacement)? When you go to Toyota's website and try to build a car with options, there are two TRD air accessories: one with the box and one without. But it never occurred to me that the filter was different. I thought it was just the presence or absence of the box that was different.

I guess I also need to look up if the new stock MY17 manual air filter size is different than previous years. The box may be changed, but maybe the filter is the same. If the stock filters really are different, then is there a third TRD air filter just for the new stock MY17 manual?

I'm not changing anything at the moment. Just planning ahead for when I need to replace my stock filter at a normal interval. I was going to go either TRD or K&N.

I'm pretty sure I got this.

Theres 2 filters. One has fangs, but tcoat thinks it's meaningless. Tcoat likes the vroom sound of the other one, but Jordanwolf says it won't let you pass like a motherF'er.

I did get that right didn't I?

You missed the entire point: it was "penis"! Without this, you will NEVER reach 300HP in an 86 as the dyno graph clearly showed.

Did you just say the TRD intake's air filter is the same as the stock TRD replacement air filter for the 13-16's?

I can't compare, and I definitely don't want to do searching.... but when I put my TRD intake on I remember the stock filter being more squatty / rectangular and the TRD intake's filter being wider by a good margin.

I have tried many times to find a different part number for the TRD intake filter vs the drop in. There is nothing to be found. I would gladly accept correction if somebody has more info though.

This is the part number according to "supra store" for the factory drop in replacement TRD filter.

I'm pretty sure winner of the 86fest dyno competition had 320 something and was female. Females, for those of you who aren't aware, are distinctly lacking in the penis department. Thus disproving your point entirely.

Wait, does that make me a fool?

Damnit I never thought to check the install instructions for a number. Everything I tried before was very ambiguous as to what exactly they meant by "TRD filter".

Perfect, I stand corrected and prior post is edited to reflect the difference.

Thanks!

You fool! Sure, she did not have a penis, but odds are her father did and therefore a penis was required to achieve the dyno results. If you dig deep enough it all comes back to penises when people quote horsepower as the goal instead of speed, agility, or some other goal that involves actually using the car on a road.

P.S. that penis-less winner of the dyno competition is a very accomplished racer whose goal was not to achieve a specific dyno number

Not quite... the previous post still says the 17 filter is larger than the 16- it may flow better (the claim is 30% better) but it is actually smaller and thinner

Oh I know that part. My confusion was on if there were two different inserts for the pre 17 TRDs. The stock post 17s have about the same flow as either of the pre 17 TRDs.
