Installed a set of these today. You definitely need to push them past where the original bolt was to get them to look correct, IMO.
I pushed them back as far as they could go, and it seemed about right. There are bumps inside the tip to prevent it from going on too far, plus the exhaust starts to bend and prevents the tips from going on further. Still once installed the way I did, they look pretty close to the proper Japanese fitment, about properly flush with the bumper. I'll post some pics in a bit. Jeff

i wonder if those bolt indents were created when they put on the usdm tips at the factory and torqued it enough to create a dent. maybe the usdm muffler is the same as the jdm muffler after all? |

I didn't do anything with the original indents. They're still there, being all indented and stuff, lol.
They may have been created at the factory, not sure. The part numbers are still different between the US and Japan exhausts, however that can be for various reasons. The US exhaust comes with the tips installed when you order it, the Japanese one does not, so that could be the reason for the different part numbers, or it could actually be different in other ways as well. Without having them side by side or taking measurements, it's hard to know. Jeff

did you put the stock bolts back on anyway? do the bolts stick out a little bit because they don't line up with the stock indents? please take some pictures for us if you can. if possible, try to take the pictures at an angle to show how far the exhaust sticks out the rear bumper. edit: one more thing: can you post the part # for the tips? I was talking about supply parts, not what the cars come with.
If you order an FR-S muffler, it comes with tips installed. If you order an 86 muffler, it does not come with tips, you have to order them separately. The bolts are the same for the USDM and JDM tips. I've posted the part number for the tips before, I'd have to find it. They are not in the North American Toyota system, I brought them in from Japan. I've got a couple pics showing the tips from various angles. I'll post them in a bit. Jeff

Side, looks about right, the flared out part above the curve is basically in line with the top of the bumper cutout:

No I am not worried about that at all. They are very secure and the bolts were tightened completely. It probably made a new (possibly not quite as large) indentation. The bolts were able to be tightened completely as far as they can go.

i just removed the stock usdm tips and this is what i think.
the stock usdm tips are pushed all the way in at the factory. there's a lip at the end of the inner oval to prevent the assembler from installing the exhaust tip too recessed. once the tip is mounted, the assembler then takes the 10mm bolts and screws it in all the way until it stops. i matched the size of the indentation with the 10mm bolts and they seem to match perfectly. to get the jdm fit and finish, i'm going to guess that you push the jdm tips all the way in until it hits the lip. then you can take the same 10mm bolts and tighten the tips down until it creates an indentation on the muffler tube. here are 2 more pics of the jdm exhaust tips fit and finish. ![]()

I did it today. Pushed them in as far as they would go and noticed you are absolutely correct, the lip keeps them from going too far in. At that point I screwed the 10 mm bolt and now they seem like they belong. Thanks! |

How's the sound with these? Any change over the stock FRS/BRZ tips?
