Based on the last 5 minutes of research I've been doing, there are different kinds, even ones with a mesh like interior, and according to the youtube clips I watch, they put a good dent in the noise. I just need it for the start up, and I'll take it out before I drive off

These silencers can make a big difference in higher quality mufflers that are big/open/straight through. They work by basically letting the exhaust saturate the sound deadening material, and use all of it as much as it possibly can, (we'll call it 100% of it's ability, it's not 100% obviously,) as opposed to just flowing OVER the sound deadening material and absorbing SOME of it.

They work good when you're trying to take the edge off your exhaust if a neighbor is whiny for a week, or you got an exhaust ticket and you're trying to lay low until your court date, they aren't a good solution for your intended use I think.

I like the idea of cutting a cherry bomb in half. I'd be apt to bring it to an exhaust shop, and have them weld on adapters so they slid in and were snug.

I had made an axle back for my car before I got my MXP SP that was a short Cherry Bomb, and a cheap DC Sports muffled tip. It actually looked and sounded awesome, and was very refined compared to the common muffler delete axle backs that aren't muffled or resonated. Cold starts were definitely loud, but on/off throttle, it sounded great.

as in it's a pain in the ass to slide them in before starting the car and then take it off 30 seconds later when revs drop, or as in they won't cut the noise by that much? I'm not really concerned with the sound level while driving, just fyi

They tend to fit really tight. They are meant to be installed and left in for a while as you drive around and live your life with a quieter exhuast. If you have a long muffler that slides in you'll have a little more leverage to pull em out quick.
