I say just burn that headunit and get a new one, either the 2016-17 one, or an actual Pioneer AVIC series-type headunit.

1. The fan is thermostatically controlled
2. A worn motor that goes into flutter doesn't always do it. It depends on how badly it's worn and other factors. Sometimes a smack will stop it for the time being. Other times a smack will start it. Unplug your radio to test for sure.
