Shift knob question

Dumb question time. What is the silver, plastic ring below the shift knob? What purpose does it serve, if any?

On mine, it is loose enough that I can spin in easily with my fingers. It doesn't seem to tighten or loosen--it just spins. Just curious if something is off on mine.

It's a piece of trim. It does exactly nothing. I replaced my knob so I don't recall if my OEM spins or no.

Quit breaking the glue on your trim.

He's Scotty2Hotty, so clearly he's too hot causing it to melt.

stop playing with the knob so much while you drive. It can cause blindness as well, didnt the priest tell you that?
