Subaru AND Toyota/Scion have said it's a normal noise, yet people still refuse to believe it and demand that they fix something that isn't broken.
People complain cause they don't like the noise!!

The complainers(like me), intend to keep the car 7 years or more. Having a car that every shade tree mechanic on planet Earth would instinctively assume has a bad/worn belt isn't something I want for 7+ years...especially if they consider it "normal".
Eh in 7 years plenty of other things on these cars will be making noise too. I don't tend to care what people around me think of my car, mechanic or not. So if the noise is truly normal then why would I care about it?

Oh and if you look at my cars you'll probably realize I don't keep cars for just a few years, unless I'm not happy with them (like the s2k). I don't see that happening with the BRZ.

Is it bad for me to be slightly embarrassed? Everything about this car is great, the throaty exhaust, the outside style, then you have this loud pain in the butt chirping...It kind of brings me down a notch

I feel the same way about a broken leg. If it only bothers you when you walk, and you can sit just fine, what's the big deal?

Reduces the rotational force needed to turn the heavy oem pully. Easier to rotate=easier/faster acceleration

Why would you care what a shade tree mechanic thinks of your car? If I wanted to appeal to the lowest common denominator in society I wouldn't have bought this car anyway.

Also I think this car will last me longer than 3 years precisely because I could care less about its quirks. Every car has weird things about it, it's just a question of whether or not they bother you.

I'd imagine it would itch all the time though

I just don't understand why you'd be embarrassed I guess. I've had a lot of people check out the car and not one has asked about or mentioned the noise. A buddy of mine who runs a shop did ask about the pulley movement though

I don't even notice it because I don't pay attention to the noise anymore.

You don't cringe when you hear a transmission whining around you while you desperately turn your head in all directions looking for the offending vehicle and hoping it isn't yours making the noise?

Or what about squeaky brakes? Blown head/tail lights? Personally I find driving the vehicle in question very ghetto and embarrassing and do whatever it takes to correct the issue ASAP.

Or what about that squeaky fan belt we've all had at one time or another? You drove weeks with that whining belt noise? I doubt it, unless you lacked the time to correct it.

It's not so much what others think, it's the fact that cars shouldn't be making belt sounding squeak noises when new and not broken and that bothers me, the driver/owner.

Come on folks, admit it...a Lambo or Ferrari comes pulling up next to you that you could hear from 2 blocks away. While you are busy drooling and wiping your mouth it settles next to you at the light. Now idling, the splendiferous sound of the engine is being drowned out by what sounds ominously like a squeaky fan belt. You know you're either going to chuckle, or cry for the owner.

Some things just don't belong underneath the hood of a car. A component that works as designed but sounds like a fan belt squeaking has no place in any modern vehicle IMO, especially one from a well established company like Subaru or Toyota. I expect that from a one-off company like Fisker or DeLorean.

No

Brakes.. yes, just to see if it's a car running track pads Head/tail lights are a safety issue and should be fixed right away.

I replace my belts before it's time, so I've literally never had a squeaky belt.

Unless it's normal operating noises of the DI system. The transmission thunks too. The windows have an annoying noise when they shut. S2000 diffs make a TON of noise. All normal, and none of that has ever bothered me. Yes, things that are BROKEN bother me and I fix them right away (or drive one of my other cars if time/parts are lacking).

We all have different limits of how much annoyance we can stand and have differing opinions of what's considered annoying but I don't understand why normal operating noises (again, assuming they really are normal) would bother anyone. It's just part of the character of the car to me.
