Huh...AFAIK on most of the Joyings it's power off--->hold power until the buttons start flashing different colors. There's apps that will reboot into recovery but I think on android versions after 4.2.2 they need root to work.

It can be done with adb commands, but that would obviously involve getting it connected to a PC :/ Some of them will do do adb over wifi...maybe see if that's available under 'developer settings'?

You have to hold power down for a good 5 seconds until you see the backlight flashing. Also if you load the ROM into the GPS SD card root location you should be able to go into settings under check for update. Should work that way.

Got it!

To get into recovery
Hold power until lights flash > let go > short press power TWICE

Switched from the malaysk ROM to the Booroondook 5.1 ROM and I'm much happier. Also installed the sound Xposed module. Much better EQ control with preamp. I do eventually want to upgrade to the new units that run marshmallow. They seem to run so much quicker.

I wonder if Viper for Android would improve the audio output even more.

Don't see why not, installing any audio app on these units improves audio so much.

Viper is packaged with most (all?) of the custom ROMS.

Another alternative to buying a new unit or soldering RAM is replacing the board...Witson sells PX5/2GB RAM/32GB ROM boards for ~$120:

People over on XDA have been installing those on many different brands of MTCD units.

You have to solder or is that just a swap. I know joying was selling an upgrade a while back for certain models. Saw install video, didn't see any soldering.

AFAIK it's just a swap, one connection to the power supply and possibly drilling a couple screw holes on certain units. I'm going to go back and read the whole long ass thread, I want to see if there's anything in there about MTCB models, and which MTCD ones people have actually done this with.

Discussion about replacing the whole board starts around page 10 or 11 of this:
