I have the best parents ever. When I was 17 and I rapped my 700hp 454 1969 Chevelle around a pole street drag racing, they said if I raced on the street, I was on my own, but if I joined the scca and only raced on the track, they would help me get a new car and even help finance me race. I took them up on their offer. My parents gave me thier 1978 Euro GTI and paid my scca membership, and that started my love of racing and smaller cars. My parents even bought me the sway bars I wanted for xmas that year. My mom complained, "metal bars, that's not a present. I tried my best to assure her it was the best present ever.
Tell your parents you will not be an ass hat on the street, and go to a few driver training or auto x, or both. |

You could also point out that Subaru builds these things and have great safety ratings as a whole and is probably the reason you walked away unscathed

First off, screw all the parental/safety concerns. I never drove a motorcycle, started on a CBR600RR, owned 6 since with last three being 1000s, never a ticket or accident. 95% of accidents can be avoided by simple common sense in any motor vehicle. Whether you have that or not is up to Darwinism but my main question is this..."I made an idiotic move, tried to cross a highway in my town and there was a car in my blind spot..." you crossed a what? A highway median? A highway lane? Based on what you said, you're at fault which your parents are right. They're protecting you from Darwinism. You're not capable of daily driving a sports car safely which puts a lot of other fellow drivers at risk. So you need a more suitable car to your driving skills. Like a Chevy Malibu or Toyota Camry. A vehicle that will not entice erotic driving behaviors. Answer my questions and I'm sure I can give you guidance on how to address the rents.

It's a cross road at a 2 lane, 50 mph highway with a cut through in the median to make left turns off of the highway. I was heading south the other car was heading east. I am perfectly capable of operating the vehicle, it could have easily ended up with me getting t boned but I avoided that and the other drivers fender scraped along the passenger side. I just made a stupid decision to ignore the signs because I wasn't afraid of a ticket and from what I could see it was clear to cross.... it was not. I've obviously learned my lesson. The specifics of the accident aren't even important. As someone else mentioned, I can't see who since I'm On my phone, they're afraid of it being a death trap. PS. I thought the same way you did for a long time. Keep thinking nothing will happen and you're in for a rude awakening. |

Your parents sign your paycheck. Until that changes, do what they want and get a safe Corolla or whatever. |

imo the only thing that convinces concerned parents is years of doing exactly what they tell you to do safely, and at the end of that they'll STILL do their best to persuade you to follow their way. If you have time for that great, otherwise live your own life and they'll come to terms eventually.
My mother was probably on the verge of tears when I came home with a $1,000 25 year old pickup truck with no airbags, abs, traction control, etc. It was a sigh of relief when I bought an FR-S, and honestly I gave in to their suggestions and got a car with modern safety features instead of another cheap 25 year old death trap. Over time trust builds and she can manage her concern but it will never go away, even after she's dead I'll do things that'll make her turn in her grave. For every time you have a twinge of regret about buying an impractical sports car there's 10 people watching you pass them in traffic going "man I wish I wasn't in this boring excuse of an automobile", nobody walks up to your co-worker with a RAV4 and asks them about their car. |

I know I did and I am, in the most responsible way I can. There's nothing I can do to change it at this point I went to school to join the family business. They will always be signing my paycheck. That doesn't mean I didn't earn it or they're just giving it to me or make the money any less mine. Should I have to buy the house they chose for me because they sign my check? Do our other employees need their permission to make a purchase because their name is on the check? |

That's basically what I've been driving since HS. A chevy blazer that's been beat to shit. And I finally upgraded and ruined it for myself. Although this accident would have been much more dangerous if I was in that truck. Even though it's much larger than the frs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Nearly 6 years of accident free driving, one Fuck up and I'm an irresponsible driver? Yeah I made A bad decision. There's no denying that. But I didn't come here to get driving advice. I was simply asking for ways to comfort my worried parents. Either way I'm going to be in a vehicle so I'd rather it be something I enjoy and I'm looking to make this transition easier. |

In the problem at hand (subject of this thread) they are not important. I am not looking for driving tips or criticism. I can handle that on my own.
