Totaled my FRS... now to convince my parents to let me get a new one.
 

So basically I just bought my 2013 FRS 3 weeks ago. I made an idiotic move, tried to cross a highway in my town and there was a car in my blind spot... the car is now totaled and I am going to be receiving a check from the insurance company to replace it.
I still REALLY want an FRS as I had it just long enough to absolutely fall in love with it. With the check I will be able to afford a new one but, the problem is my parents (specifically my mother) are terrified to have me in another small car. I've absolutely learned my lesson, there's no doubt about that. They just don't think an FRS offers enough protection.
I will be paying my fines as well as continuing to pay my insurance myself, so it's not like it's a financial burden to them. It's just the fact of safety.

Can anyone offer some advice to help me convince them that everything will be okay?

Find a job to pay off the next car and prove that you take responsibility.

I work for my parents. 50+ hours a week. Saving a large majority of my paycheck every week. The insurance check would cover the new car. I am taking 100% responsibility for what happened in regards to my fines, points on my license, insurance increase and overall dealing with the insurance claim.
I'm doing everything in my power not to burden them in anyway with the situation. They're just worried.

Honestly?

Take a defensive driving course to prove you are serious about driving safer.

You can find stuff on the internet all you want but you need to take action to put your words into something more tangible.

How old are you? And where do you see yourself in 5 years? I almost regret buying mine just because a 4 door is a bit more practical and i am going into law enforcement. I love sportscars, but wish i had mine as a weekend car and another to daily.
Reasons to buy again:
You survived, the car has a great crash rating, only problem is that the whole car is a crumple zone
Not a lot of power, great learning car, hard to screw up drastically unlike something a bit more mean, such as a Corvette
Cheap, about the cheapest new car on the market, easy to find and buy parts, whether OEM or aftermarket

I'm 22, just out of college. I have a serious gf but we're not married and aren't looking to have kids for a while. My family's company has plenty of trucks for me to use if I ever have a situation where I need something larger.

I mean, I can post videos all day about how safe this car is, or how safe my Lexus ES is, or how safe air travel is...

at the end of the day, what's more important? The machinery, or the person operating it? You can have a perfectly safe car (Mustang) and have people fuck up enough to make it not safe.

If you screwed up so easily then I would bet you would screw up again very easily. Money is an easy thing to toss around, especially when you have (minimum) insurance to cover your ass. Skills, now that's something money CANNOT buy unless you are willing to learn.

Take that course, make a deal with your parents, and they will be more willing to trust you.

Although I did make that mistake, I would not consider myself a bad driver, I am typically a very good defensive driver. This was my first accident since I've started driving when I was 16. But, there is always room for improvement. I think the classes will really go along way with my parents

You don't need to convince us of anything. The only persons you need to convince are your parents, and right now they view you as a very bad defensive driver in the FRS.

You're in a good spot to buy another, and at 22 you should be able to decide what car you buy. Just think about your career and what kind of car would fall in line, or rent/lease a car for a month and see how you feel. It took me 2 months of an Altima to realize other cars and their purpose in the world.

everyone is responding like his parents are merely concerned with his driving ability...it sounds like they are more concerned about thinking the car is a death trap but the twins are far from one..I got hit head on by an Impala going 50 MPH and I didn't get a scratch despite the small overlap crash being the weakest rated type of crash for the twins. Before the small overlap adjustment to the current IIHS crash testing, the twins were a "top safety pick" which I don't recall any of the RWD coupes under $35 K (muscle cars/Miata) having..

No, you did, so it's not the breed of that horse that is not good for you ...... it's your ability to ride it.

So, ask your mom ...... should I get a smaller horse ...... or a larger horse ... ??

Will a larger horse be safer (how many mountain broke horses are really large) .. ??

Now, as far as your Mom ...... ol humfrz suggests she "let you go" and go to pick out a horse you like.

Whatever horse, just learn how to ride it ...... ;)
