I will be 60 next month (there I said it out loud). I have had more cars than I can count. Last December I sold my DD (2015 5.0 GT Mustang, stick ,Performance pac, Recaro's, Ect. Ordered new) I bought my 2017 86 about 2 months ago, Out the door for well under $30,000. I have made a few mods has you can see below.
I am thinking about a Jackson Racing Super Charger next. This is a great DD, as is. I have some other cars as well. But this is the one I drive the most. Life is short. If you can afford it, go for it!

I don't suppose I'll have a "mid-life crisis" car if I never had or will have a "practical" car. I'm not that old though, 31.

Go for the 86, have fun with it. Worth every penny.

Throw that term away. It's a stupid phrase coined by sexist women, envious young people with no money and covetous losers who have managed to trap themselves in lives they hate, all of whom think they know better how to spend your money than you do. It's none of their business, and you don't have to make any apologies to them by adopting their silly insult.

There's no "crisis." Those of us who buy sports cars in our 40s, 50s and 60s aren't panicking over lost youth. We never lost it. We have just reached the point where we can afford (both monetarily and otherwise) to do what we want, and we deserve to be able to use the fruits of our labor how we see fit without some judgmental fool slapping a label on us in an attempt to make us feel guilty about it.

The non-curved bits are the part you have to put up with to get to the curves. Once there, that's where the fun lives. Even the stock car lives for it.

56 & I come from the motorcycle side of things. bought a CB750F in 1980 & still have it. Cars were Mazda GLC, Hyundai Pony, Ranger, Suzuki Esteem, all such wonderful cars... I tried the Mustang & Genesis, but were too heavy & big for me. When this car came out it was perfect for me, I'm 5,9 170lbs. This was quite the treat for me, I've been very frugal with my $$$. mid life crisis.. lol more a mid life celebration, as was mentioned. I got a 2015, wanted to put an SC but after 40,000 km I like it the way it is.
As was mentioned before, try it, it's an amazing drivers car.
This is actually my second one & I would buy another(even with all those stupid buttons on the wheel).
Try autoX & track, WOW!!!!
I like the rant from Extrashaky...

For those who bitch about power, the above paragraph is the secret to staying ahead of a lot of better cars. When someone here says "learn how to drive the car first", that is what they mean. Try it sometime. Doing that is far more satisfying than throwing money at a parts catalog if you at are all interested in "driver involvement", which, BTW, can be done in either an AT or MT car.

Folk see middle-aged guys going out an buying motorcycles and call that a 'mid-life crisis'. To me, giving up riding was a mid-life crisis. I just couldn't put my wife and kid through that kind of emotional trauma again, and consider myself lucky I'm still able to rock-climb 3 times a week (indoor gym). After the last crash, there was 6 months when I wasn't sure whether I'd ever be able to rock climb again (due to my shoulder), and that was a real crisis for me.

Folk refer to middle-aged guys buying sports cars and motorcycles as 'mid-life crisis', but I've never really understood that. To me, a real mid-life crisis is not being able to do that because you've been laid off, can't make mortgage payments, can't afford college for the kids, or don't have retirement savings etc. Being able to afford something you enjoy after you've put years of hard work into 'practical' expenditures is a celebration; not a crisis.

The couple of times someone saw my car and said 'mid life crisis, eh?', my response was along the lines of 'Nah, it's a mid-life celebration. It'd be a crisis if I couldn't afford to buy something I want instead of need. I've put my time in; I deserve it."
I can see WHY you gave up bike riding ........

This is my fist new car I have ever owned. Took me until 45 to get one. Parents didn't buy it for me, no co-signer, just hard work and saving for the right car to come along. That car is the Ferrari 458, but since I can't afford that the 86 was just right for me. The Ferrari I will wait for the Power Ball win.

The 86 is a great solution for the over 30 crowd that want a sporty toy that is fun, reliable, and easy to maintain. This car will be my first step to eventually becoming an old guy with a new Corvette! LOL. Thank you Akio Toyoda for getting Subaru in line for making such a good well rounded fun car (but boo for making the USDM version so stripped down and monospec).

When I think mid-life crisis car .... I think Corvette. Especially the convertibles. A female professional friend of mine in her early 50's (I'm 54) referred to these guys driving the Vetts as "Pea-Cocking". Old guys strutting around in their Vetts with the spray on tans, hair plugs and gym muscles.

I've never thought of the 86 as a mid-life vehicle. To myself ... the 86 was always a younger generation car.

Wow...nice to see so many riders and former riders who understand my love for two wheels.

Riding is nothing something I "do" it's something I am. Hence my name on the forum "Trackrider54":

I'm not much into the "point it straight and nail the throttle" stuff. I love to dance with the machine. The interface between man and machine is what makes me happy. I don't need 400hp....if so....I'd be on a Mustang forum. I don't need super sticky tires and such. I want the car to slip a bit and move around allowing me to interact with it.

That's what I love about riding motorcycles. They will buck you off if you don't know what you're doing. Toss you like a rag doll.

I'm older, fatter, and slower these days. This is my ride now:

The above is a fine example of our Tennessee roads.

Regarding the fit...I'm 6'2" with a 3-4" mohawk, and it starts to hit the ceiling sometimes...I would say that you should go test drive one to see if you even fit at 6'5". I also have the issue where if i'm first up at the intersection, the traffic lights are clipped by the ceiling because i'm too tall, so I have to lean forward a bit to see when the light changes.

HOWEVER, if you can deal with that, this car is super magical awesome fun.
