I agree. I have never drove or even sat in one but neither have about 99.9% of the guys that drool over them. As you said it is a cool car but the hype exceeds the reality. That and even it could not do the things they did in the movies (not and stay out of jail or alive at any rate).

Set expectations extremely low, the Z4 at it's peak moved 20k units in 2003, I supremely doubt the Z5/Supra ever tops that given recent auto sales trends.

I'd be very impressed if they managed to move even 1k/month combined at peak. That would be outselling the 911.

1000+ hp on stock internals bro

That plus the movie is pretty much all the hype. Undeniably it's an excellent machine put together very well, I bet it'd be a blast to drive one that's well setup, if they never got rice taxed to hell I bet they'd still be worth money because it's so capable on it's own merits (like clean FD RX-7's, C5 'Vette, 996 911). But I'll take a Porsche at the same price point any day. That will go for the new one as well.

Right, that's what I meant in my first post. The 2jz and the exposure through movies/video games.

The one from the movie made lik 560hp (iirc) and that felt really quick to me. Granted, I was like 11 at the time, but I get the hype for the powerplant. The actual car itself is where I have trouble. I'd rather just drop the 2j into a different, lighter chassis.

The Supra is the highest build quality, most reliable, tuning friendly car ever made. Add in low production #s for the TT/6sp combination and the movie fame and there isn't much else to 'get'. There were better track cars (RX7, NSX) but for the non-track enthusiast the Supra dominated the hearts and minds in the turn of the century tuning phase for pretty simple reasons. Pick a car from that time that isn't an NSX and do a 1v1 comparo and its virtues become apparent.

Also they didn't randomly choose the Supra for F&F 1 -- 90s tuners figured out pretty quickly that it was significantly faster than any other attainable car with minor upgrades. That's why the Ferrari scene in the first one had so much impact.

Actually, the choice for a Supra in the first movie was random. Originally, they were going to use a 3000GT, but then they were persuaded to the Supra for a variety of reasons.

The people who wrote that movie had pretty much no idea what they were talking about. There were people hired on just to TRY to help keep them on track.

What was the variety of reasons?

The original screenplay the hero car was a RB26 swapped 240SX, which is why the "2jz... no shit" line makes no sense. It was supposed to be "RB26... no shit."

LOL I wonder how many of the Fanbois are going to try to call you out with their "facts" over your "lies".
Without knowing your back story (and that it is real) it does just come off as tall tails.

Lol where are you getting this info from?

Long story short: My dad was tech advisor for the first 2 movies and gathered the cars for the Tokyo Drift. He was the owner of the orange supra & blue maxima in the first movie, along with the silver skyline in the second.

He was approached at a car show by some people who handed him a script for a movie (was then called "Redline") He went through it, and then they started making changes here and there and started production. The 3000GT was ditched because there were better tuner cars on the market, cars that people considered to be more prestigious than others, and because certain scenes would not work with the 3000GT. The scene where Paul Walker jumps out of the Supra onto the Semi truck required a vehicle with a targa top- something that the 3000GT didn't offer.

My Dad had a Supra at the time, took Rob Cohen for a ride in it and, after consideration, they ultimately decided they were going to use that vehicle for the movie. An RB-swapped 240sx was never in contention to be the hero car lol

There was a similar scenario with 2F2F. The hero car was supposed to be a couple of compact Dodge tuner cars (take a guess) but they turned down the proposal from Dodge and intercepted a couple Evo VIIs on their way to a rally time somewhere in Europe.
