Even with newer Porsches, although thy are very reliable, your bank account still gets hit one way or another..... expensive servicing, expensive tyres, MPG (unless you have the very new efficient 4 cylinder engines).....oh and you'll need to fork out to renew the warranty once that's up, because who can afford to replace the PDK. Also, you have taken some sh*t on this thread, but id just like to say that I've found myself a bit wound up before by my colleagues being snobby about our car. Owners of Golf Rs, old AMG mercs and F type jags randomly telling me my car is a piece of crap, without provocation. |

Your colleagues are car illiterate and think that a car's value is how much they paid. There were many great examples in the entire car manufacturing history that were not so expensive and their worth was much more than others.

There was a comparison years ago that pitted an E90 M3 and an ISF. They got nearly identical lap times. Once they turned off every electronic aid they could... The M3 proved to have a far superior chassis on the street and on the track. Thats what you get with a german car. Turn off the gadgets in a GTR and it becomes a rattly piece of plastic. Do the same in any Porsche and you get a lot of fun! |

You can give an FRS a similar, or superior power to weight ratio than a 718 but there's 2 things you're gonna have a hard time overcoming. First is the lightning fast shifts of a PDK transmission, especially with launch control. And the 2nd is hooking up those rear tires. The Porsche has the benefit of having the engine's weight almost directly over the drive wheels. No such luck in the FRS. A properly modded FRS is a beautiful thing, but you've got to see look beyond numbers here. Not that simple.

BRZ/86 makes a good alternative to a Porsche Cayman.
I made that choice and finances had no effect on my decision. Porsches attract attention, from envious vandals to uptight cops. The BRZ is such a sleeper. My speed shop wanted to put their license frame on my BRZ after they installed the eForce Supercharger. I said, sorry but no guys. I need a "my car is fast" badge like I need points on my license. No thanks. |

BRZ IS a great alternative to a Porsche Cayman! But less so if you dump 5 figures worth of money into modifications.
Did you previously own a Porsche to come to those conclusions? Because in my experience (here in the US) your statement about envious vandals and uptight cops is inaccurate. I get the occasional compliment at stations when pumping gas, but out on the road my BRZ got more attention from other motorists.

Something else to add, if you manage to make your 86 as fast as a 718 around the track...and you did it for the same amount of money that a 718 would cost you (used or new). You still wouldn't have the overall longevity that Porsche tries to build into their cars. They are designed to handle weekend warrior track abuse and be built up if need be. And give you all that robustness and performance while also being a pleasant DD.
So besides engine placement balance, robustness....the BRZ would not be a pleasant car to drive once you created your 718 destroyer. And you would have likely spent much more money. A BRZ will never be a Cayman. But a Cayman will never be a BRZ either. Some who have owned both I think know what I mean by that statement. I loved all my P-cars I have had. The good thing is I love the fun and experience I have with my BRZ on the road and track. It does cost me much less to operate and I still have just as much fun tracking it. Do I sometimes long for a P-car when I am at the track, sure.....I also lust to turn laps in a vette, in Maclaren, in a GT350, etc. Cause I want to experience all of them. BUT, funny enough when I was tracking my Caymans, I also lusted to have me BRZ back. So I decided to stay in the little Subie till it wasn't fun anymore, hasn't happened yet. I wouldn't built a BRZ to be Porsche. And the reverse makes no sense. If you want the 718 try and find a way to get there. If you want the BRZ, take it and make it the best BRZ that fits you. But don't aim to make it a Porsche. Its a pipedream.

Porsche can go MANY miles and the cost to own over 1Mil miles is much less than a Subaru @ 1Mil miles... Completely different level of engineering. You pay for this if you shop new... |

The old Caymans where the under-powered cars of Porsche. Many where praising their handling, but not their power. A 718 is an entirely different car and it looks that Porsche "listen" their customers. If we are comparing our cars with Caymans, then it is important to know the model years. Earlier Cayman models where still faster, but not that faster!
