With nearly 7k miles on the latest pump, I'm starting to detect hints of the crickets returning. Certainly not as bad as it was before, but I will monitor the situation.
It's most evident the moment you turn off the car (after running for a while) -- you can hear the HPFP briefly chirp as it shuts off. |

Of course i wouldn't expect them to stock every part. The way the tech talked when i set up my appointment was that they were going to have the parts ordered before hand. They pushed that it wasn't really something they could do on a saturday since it would take a few hours to replace. If they were just going to verify the issue again when I brought my car in I don't see why I couldn't set up a saturday appointment.

Wow! What a difference!
I bought my 2013 used, and had never owned a Subaru before so I thought to myself "that is just how this car sounds"... Had the new pump installed and it sounds like an entirely different car! Perhaps my pump was more severe than most, but I am amazed by the difference. I can now see why this upset owners who had driven a car that developed the noise. I never really understood what the fuss was about before. Between my 4.56 gears, switch to Motul gear oil, and new fuel pump I am one happy owner!!!

I just meant for quiet. I have always ran the SSs but after reading the reviews on the 3 Plus I decided to go for them. WAY quieter than even the SS and actually blow them away in every other aspect as well.

Well, my high pressure fuel line was still leaking at the driver side direct injector rail following the dealership's installation of the revised high pressure fuel pump. The leak was minor, but after a while it would pool on top of the head and you could start to smell it in the cabin. A quick clean up with a rag would take care of it for a few hundred miles, at which time enough fuel would have pooled again that the smell would return. After two trips to the dealership to get them to fix it, and being told both times that they've tightened the fitting and now it's fixed, I'd had enough and just decided to fix it myself. I relieved the fuel pressure, removed the AC compressor, and removed the leaking fuel line fitting. Cleaned everything off, slightly bent the fuel line to better align with the rail, and then put it all back together. Hopefully, it's sorted out. The good news is, the revised pump still isn't chirping, so even with the poor dealership installation I'd say it was worth it.

Had some warm cricket inducing temps and no a "crick" or "et" to hear!

Noob question...
If I do not change the HPFP, will this have a negative impact on my car? I do have a bit of the chirping and have told my dealership about it, they stated there was no TSB for my car (South Africa). I've noticed the TSB says this will not impact the car negatively if not changed. I am thinking of printing the TSB for them cause I don't want any issues later down the line BUT if theres no real issue beside the chirping noise I will just drive faster Any ideas what I should do? |

The TSB are not a recall or even a notice of an issue. They are simply formal documents to the techs on how to fix identified problems. It is up to the dealers if they will do the wok or not.

6 month update
I got TSB S-SB-0007-16 done 6 months ago @ 62,631 miles -- No crickets with the new HPFP at the time. Very happy with those results.
Fast forward to the present and 8,700 miles later (71k) and the crickets are starting to come out of hibernation. It still isn't as bad as my original HPFP, but the sound is getting progressively louder where it is noticeable. This problem may not have been solved after all.

I am in the process booking my car for its annual service and I have asked the garage to take a look at the fuel pump. Having read your response above I'm thinking is it worth the hassle of getting it checked and then rebooked for the work.. I like to minimise my visits to the garage. |
