It's not only because of the brand image (if it was, they wouldn't have made Cayenne to cover the fixed cost), but the development of H6 itself.
And I totally agree that Boxer engine doesn't need a TT. It would be overkill.
I don't think it will considering Toyota can use the H6 that Subaru already uses and add there extra spin on it(D/I) like they are doing with the H4 from Subaru. And if they use the engine in other cars in the future like they said they would then cost wouldn't be a major issue at all.

I was joking. I know shaving weights from the chassis itself is the hardest part.

If it's as easy as you said, it wouldn't take Toyota 2+ years to make this car. H6 that Subaru is using on their SUV is low revving, and (probably) less refined than H4 they have been using for 25 years.
Toyota lineup has almost nothing suitable for H6. Camry, Highlander, Corolla, Venza, Sienna or Land Cruiser?
Toyota needs to make it more competitive in fuel efficient not performance. They build FT-86 because the car can make them not to become a ghoul brand.

Ahem.

I love how every time someone breaks from the forum orthdoxy (i.e., "this car doesn't need to be fast in a straight line!"), everyone gets pissy...

For the umpteenth time:

If the car creeps from the mid to the upper 20's (which it presumably will based on reports from several months ago), it will compete with other sports/sporty cars that can be had for that price.

That is reality. It WILL compete and be compared to 370Z, all the ugly pony cars, and even the ghosts of cars no longer with us (e.g., Celica).

It's going to have a WRX motor, and there is undoubtedly a turbo in the Subaru parts bin that will fit on to it -- if they offer that as an option, everyone will have a chance to purchase the car they want.

With ~500 less lbs, it will be capable of doing more with less; 250 - 275 bhp would get it hanging on the 370's tail, and the aftermarket can take it from there.

We already know it will turn; I would like to also own one that can merge into traffic and overtake a few cars too. I want the fast version, thanks.

it's not that people DON'T want power. people DON'T want a high price tag. i for one DO NOT want anything above 25k. if you can afford a 370z competitor i don't see why you couldn't just fork up the cash and buy a 370z now. the reason why people are so excited about this car is it represents a new class of sports car that hasn't existed in a decade, with one of the most important factors being PRICE. as others have stated i'd rather go aftermarket as far as adding power.

There is one car out there that no one here has discussed. If the FT86 gets close to 30k this will be a DIRECT competitor to the BMW 128. They start at 30k, I-6 230hp, gets 28mpg(hwy), and has a back seat(for all of those making that excuse).

if you want a 370z rival then why don't you ask toyota to make a supra. because they made it clear from the start that they weren't planning on rivaling the z with this car.

if you want something like a 370 then go and buy a 370, its a good car..
are you willing to pay $70000 for the FT86? really? whats wrong with you id rather get a 135 for that much.. if this car is anything over 35000 aud it will be a flop in australia, just like the 370 is a flop in australia..

I like the new tail lights and the fenders better than the old. I think with the lowered diffuser I've seen in the photochop threads, making the tail lights red with chrome inside, and BURNING the leds and putting normal foglights is all the car needs to be the perfect production model. That and for it to have space for a double din sterior system so I can keep my gps

So basically the exact same car except for headlights, tailights and front grille.

Just what I expected.

Hopefully STi and TRD get their hands on these cars and create radically different versions.
