Because Canadian auto workers will work for half the wage... and then apologize for it.
...No, that's not it. Because where else can Detroit executives enjoy Swiss Chalet, Tim Horton's and Poutaine, and then some Canadian Ballet after work? ...No, that's not it either. The two week summers? ...nah. It's the Molson Export! Must be the reason. |

Maybe they just want to please Her Majesty. Oh, fun fact... My wife's cousin is a brewmaster for Molson in Vancouver. To keep this semi-about-cars, how popular ARE the 86 twins in Canada, or at least Ontario? I know I've seen a TON of pickup trucks in Canada, and saw just lots of cheap and luxury sedans in Ottawa and Montreal. |

Pretty much every vehicle made in Canada is sold primarily in the US. This is where the location comes into play though. Since the section of Canada that assembles (no body "makes" a vehicle anymore) is central and sticks way down past what people think of as the border it is relatively cheap to ship them anyplace in the US. "Now Tcoat you just said that companies don't want to ship parts long ways so why is it OK for cars?" Well let me explain that... So my company makes a rotor for A Gmordhrsler truck and it costs $9 to make. We can ship it to the plant in Illinois for about $1 a rotor. To ship it to a plant in Mexico costs about $5 a rotor. We need to ship 4 rotors per vehicle. That is a 30% increase in the cost of one component of one vehicle and the cost gets rolled up into that truck. We ship 4 million rotors a year from our plant! Now we take a fully assembled $25,000 car and it costs about $200 to $400 to ship pretty much anyplace in the USA. The shipping cost is also tacked onto the price of the car so it doesn't even chew up profit! Those parts are going to get made nearby but shipping the finished product is cheap.

The Looney is worth $0.74, that's a big reason. I wonder if there are more lax environmental laws too?

The low dollar helps trade for us yes but we end up paying more for consumer goods. Besides it isn't always that low. It was above the US dollar for quite a while back a couple of years ago. All in all far to variable to be a firm attraction.

I was going to forward this thread to "The Journal of Irreproducible Results " but now I am thinking "The Economist" might be more appropriate...

So your saying there is a lot of american muscle from the 60's and 70's in Canada? That would be one of the last places I would expect old cars to be. With the winters and all the salt i would think the steel bodied cars would just rust away very fast.
