Haven't been visiting this site lately. But wow. Looks like a lot of pent up rage from all the responses. But ............

OP: you hit the jackpot on key seo words. Mentioning road racing light to light. Poor grammar. 0-60 times. LS engine swap or SC. Americans like light to light instead of handling cars. Etc. Etc.

I've wondered why ALL the car plants seem to be in Ontario. Are there any in say, Alberta or BC? I've never heard of them being anywhere but in Ontario, but with the taxes up there, I'd have figured some plants would've popped up in Alberta at some point (except not now while the NDP is in charge over there, raising taxes).

Nope they are all within two hours of me. I have been in every one of those plants at least 4 times and a couple of them a hundred or so over the years.

Most of them are in the southern part of Ontario due to reduced shipping costs for parts and vehicles. The taxes are not a big deal for them since they get some pretty steep cuts to be here. As it is we have lost many plants over the years that were pulled back to the US or sent to Mexico. I live about 10 minutes from a big empty field where all the Ford Falcon, then Mavericks, Pintos and Fairmont's, then EXP and Crown Vics were built for 40 some odd years. Anybody that remembers the Crown Vic police cars knows just how many of those things were pushed out and how big a plant it had to be.

Because it's the closest to Detroit.

That was part of it back in the beginning for sure. But why was Detroit so big for the assembly plants?

Same reason why certain areas in the world specialize in producing one or two things in a concentrated area: because suppliers like to be closer to manufacturing plants (and vice versa).

Henry Ford started in Detroit and it sorta never changed much after that. Manufacturing moved to Canada because it was cheaper to make some things there.

Nowadays plants can be anywhere where there is access to reliable transportation, but companies like Toyota who still practice their "just in time" production philosophy will still be clustered next to virtually all their major suppliers.

I wonder what supplier Toyota is near with their massive plant in the San Antonio area...

As long as Toyota gets their parts in a reliable/timely fashion, where their plant is doesn't really matter. It's all logistics planning to be honest.

Modern day manufacturing relies on good logistics more than location.

The most important thing people forget about modern day manufacturing is that where the products are to be sold usually play a much bigger role in where the manufacturing will be, rather than "it's cheaper to make it here than there"... this is to guard against fluctuations in exchange rate that can wipe out your profits in a week. Toyota Tundras are made in the USA mostly because it's primarily sold in the USA, so there's no point for it to be made in Canada or Japan or elsewhere.
