Noob drop in air filter questions!
Hey guys, whats up!
I been thinking about getting a drop in air filter for my frs. Just a drop in filter, one of those where you open the latch and place it in, because I don't want to spend too much or modify anything yet, and start small and easy. I had a couple questions regarding them. I wanted to know if it'll change the exhaust note or the cars sound in general, making it louder/deeper? Will it increase any HP or change the throttle response? Even a slight change will be good for me, and ill be ok with it! What is the best drop in air filter, any brands you guys recommend, main differences between them?Which particular one would make the sound louder? I am looking to make my car sound louder/deeper and will take any gained HP. even slightly for both! - Thanks for your help, appreciate it! Last edited by dinfern22; 04-14-2017 at 05:54 PM. |

@dominicpadawan Thanks for the links man!
I decided I'm getting a K&N drop in air filter, because of its popularity, do you guys recommend a different air filter that will make the car louder? Anyone have experience with this one? I've read that since its an oil air filter it can let a lot of dirt into my engine, and cause oil build up. I live in Maryland so should I be concerned? Does the K&N one fit well, I've read many posting that their air filters don't fit properly, and so the latches wont close? Also can I just install the drop in air filter without unscrewing the whole box but instead the unlock the two latches and place it inside and close? -Thanks for your input! |

I have a HKS, it was dropped in by just unclipping the top clips. |

@dominicpadawan clean it every year, are you sure? Should I not follow the recommended cleaning, which is every 50,000 miles? I daily drive this, aggressively and I don't live in a dusty area either. I drive about 1,000 miles every month.
Haha found out about that sound tube and thought this is cool as shit so I ordered a TRD sound changer set just last week! |

Holy eff.... buy the k&n locally, look at your airbox, figure out installation. Its a 30 second procedure and k&n has a long standing reputation for quality. Most drop ins will be minimal in their sound change and not much in noticeable hp gain.

To be truthful it was an afterthought as I had taken my car into the garage to swap the header, OP, front pipe, change the springs and have spacers installed when I remembered that I should update the air filter. So the air filter was kind of lost in the big changes made to the exhaust system. The HKS was recommended by the garage as I was initially thinking of buying the K&N. All of the changes certainly freed up the engine and removed the torque dip too.. |

So I bought a K&N air filter guys and to my surprise it made the sound better and the throttle response improved!
![]() Can you guys tell me if I installed it properly? I don't want to have left the air box slightly open and have pollutes into my engine. I kept trying to close the box with the K&N fully inside, but on the bottom it sticks out, I can feel it with my hands and a picture I took shows it as well. Is this normal for the K&n to show at the bottom? When I closed the box empty without a filter it closes fully and sticks together. Are the plastic clips on the side fitted correctly as well and not sitting too tight and wrong like shown on the DIY thread? -Thanks for your help! Left side ![]() Right side ![]() Bottom- If you look closely you can see the K&N filter between the box, not fully inside.

I just wanted to make sure if it was okay to have the K&N filter be visible a little on the bottom side only? I'm guessing this is fine because I've read many saying that they can see the outline of their air filters as well. |
