Basically, it's going to be a slightly lighter, slightly less powerful RX-8, minus the rotary engine and half-doors.

I'd expect the performance figures of the car to match up quite nicely with the RX-8. The car has less horsepower, but more torque (if the 200hp boxer-4 engine is indeed accurate), so it will have a bit less top end but be easier to launch, resulting in very similar 0-60 times.

An intake/exhaust treatment and maybe a tune and you're looking at a low-14s car in the 1/4 mile. So it's not going to be SLOW. It's just not going to be jaw-droppingly fast like one of the new 5.0 mustangs. It's also not going to have a chance in hell of beating one around a track (MAYBE a very tight autocross track, but even then, the new stangs handle...)....though it will probably be more fun to flick around in real world conditions.

Definitely still interested in this car....though the price is going to be a big issue for me. If this thing costs any more than my current car (a GTI), I'm not interested. With all the options I got, I paid 25k out the door. I better be able to get this car for that or no deal. If they offer a turbo model I'd consider breaking 27k....But frankly, if I can go get an AWD WRX with the turbo boxer for 25k, I think I should be able to do the same with this car. 265hp would make this much more palatable to me. Not because of the power, but because of how much easier it is to make MORE power from a turbo mill. My 2010 GTI has just over $1000 invested in mods and is putting down 253 to the wheels....compared with a stock 200 at the crank. Turbos are just nice like that.

Hope it's not a Scion....they put really horrible sounding audio systems in their cars.
No power or performance figures have been confirmed, although we know they are thinking about offering a turbo model based on commentary from the developers and their shiny G's concept version.

So, yes, I too am hoping for a turbo version, and if it can be tweaked to put down around 240 to the tire with minimal effort, it will be as fast but far better handling than the 370Z.

I'll happily take a Subaru version if that's the one with the blower or turbo

My prediction: 2.0L motor with 230hp and direct injection and high red line. 2.0L turbo with direct injection and 300HP.

Yes, I do agree and hope for that... but still it's a speculation.
Um...what? Subaru is making the boxer engine and both the Toyota and Subaru versions are RWD. The Subaru architecture on display clearly showcased the boxer engine and lack of any method to power the front wheels.

This should be common knowledge by now. The fact that the car is getting a Subaru boxer 4 has been common knowledge for ages.

Hell, the whole car was engineered by Subaru. It's a chopped imprezza platform with a Subaru engine and converted to RWD. That's probably the reason for the aisin tranny that it looks to be getting. This whole "ae86 spiritual successor" thing is a stunt to get Toyota enthusiasts jazzed for the release. It's not really the successor to anything because Toyota didn't even provide the drivetrain or chassis.

i think he meant in the current line up.. we all know whats GOING to happen but its USELESS to predict. when you change the drivetrain setup (ie AWD to RWD) you need to think about how you are going to put the torque down as your contact patch for power transmition has just effectively halfed, so its uselles to guess based on the current subaru engines.. one of the solutions is to lower torque but make more revvs to get more power

Me too. And I swear if that happens, I'll eventually buy both. I don't think they'll push for that much power either way. methinks ~210-220 NA, ~265-295 boosted.

Just because it raids the Subaru parts bin, doesn't mean everything is engineered by Subaru. Get that shitty idea out of your head. I'd like to believe that toyota's engineers have quite a bit of input, and It's been said that the chassis has had so many changes that it could be considered a new platform (legacy btw, not impreza). Furthermore, the Aisin (toyota) tranny, diff, and brakes seem to be coming from the Toyota parts bin.

Let's not forget Toyota commissioned this car, with it's own set of objectives; Subaru wasn't building a rwd car before this.

Wow. Doesn't the RX-8 have uncomfortable rear seats? If that's so, then I can't even imagine using the rear seats on the FT...

Exactly, it doesn't matter if EVERY part comes from a subaru. Toyota commissioned and designed the car and it's suppose to have the driving FEEL of the 86.
