When I increase fan speed, the whoosh drowns it out.

I suggest you go fire a few rounds through this, not wearing any ear protection, then you won't hear stuff like that no more.

Mine started doing this just this weekend. Didn't do it before. It's loud enough for my passenger to notice it.

I assumed it was a leaf or something in there, but there's no trees in my yard or near my parking lot.

I dunno. One of those "wait and see" things.

Junk normally shouldn't get in there because the blower is downstream of the cabin filter. It's not a perfect world, though.

The motor brushes are molded out of a fine powder similarly to the way pencil lead is made. Ever encounter a chunk of "something" in a pencil lead that isn't exactly pencil lead? The same thing can happen with motor brushes. When that happens the brush can get a little noisy until the snag breaks free.
