Are you retaining the fuel filler location or relocating? Looks like the door is moulded into the panel and not functional in the pic?

Yeah, the fuel tank will be in the normal location, but will be of the bag variety in a metal box filled via some ports in the rear end. I was gonna fill in the recess for the filler flap but decided it was part of the fender and looks good so left it.

Well guys, I've been busy mould making so thought I'd pop up some pictures of what I've been doing..

The A pillar mould, outer section only..

Sill, or rocker panel as you call it..

And the door post with upper sill... gelcoat only..

Right here, right now at 15:47 on 17th March I'm ready to start making up the flanges ready to mould the whole rear fenders. I'm hoping to have all this done by April 1st, but I have a brand new Focus RS due anytime and a Mustang GT is coming in the summer..

Thanks man.. I should post here more often then. You can always follow along on Instagram.. I'm gt86nige.

I forgot one big change to what people normally do with the rear ends when building these cars.. inner arches..

So, the inner arch is part of the outer arch and seals perfectly with the steel inner arch. Not also how the rear bumper fits in to keep air out and reduce drag.

The rectangular hole is there to enable the part to be moulded. If I didn't have the cut out I wouldn't get into the corner of the lip around the top. This will be made as a separate piece that will fit and get glassed into the hole.

Well guys, the moulding has finally finished and I have a full set of side panel moulds ready to make some lightweight wide body panels.

Keep checking to see what comes next.

Wow! making your own quarter and rocker panels huh? Will the material be as stiff as the OEM stamping or will that not matter because of roll cage?

Good question.. the panels will be as "stiff" but obviously will not have the deformation qualities of steel. The panel on the 86 is not a stress bearing member so the rigidity is not an issue.

Here we have the beginnings of some new panels, this is a RB V1 style fender, but moulded integrally with the steel fender to save all the cutting and drilling

Fantastic work! Do you have a target weight of the finished car?

Interesting.

Based on the image below, I would have thought the steel panels rear of the engine bay add some structural rigidity to the monocoque.

How are you going to attach the composite panels to the frame? Also, have you estimated how much weight your composite body panels will save alone? I'm very interested in knowing that.

Keep up the good work!!
