I took mine out yesterday... and a couple of young girls were staring me down as I was parking at the walmart... as I was leaving an older guy said 'nice car' .... I've only got 1700km on it, but seems to get more attention than I would have expected.

Oh where I live I see 2-3 on a daily basis....at least the last gen. There were a few by my place that sold for 14-15k. There are a couple at a dealership near me that's had their Scions there for 4-5 months now. Sure, they may not be the common Corollas or Civics but they're getting cheaper and attainable. I should've waited to get one for half but instead paid 31k out the door for my FRS

Ah but you got a nice shiny unmolested one. Besides somebody has to buy new so there are used ones.
Around home I have seen 6 in 3 years. I have to drive two hours away to see them in any numbers and even then you may see none. Last summer I drove to New Jersy for a week and never saw a single one the whole trip. Thought I would be tripping over them the way people talk.
There still aren't more of them somehow since the price has gone down. That makes no sense at all.

I still get plenty of looks, double takes, and random compliments in NYC lol.

The green/teal RPF1s I have probably draw extra attention.

It does when it's painted Hot Lava.

EDIT: In my case I'm pretty sure I draw extra attention because I'm cruising in the right lane doing the speed limit and staying away from all the nutjobs in a rush to go nowhere to the left of me...in a bright orange sports car.

EDIT 2: Actually, this past weekend I stopped at a gas station convenience store and ended up parking next to a red Acura RSX Type S (not the Type R winged kind, just the little deck lid spoiler out back)....with the owner's trophy wife/girlfriend sitting in the passenger seat waiting for him to get out of there. As I finished my business inside and was walking out, the RSX was backing out and leaving. Passenger was looking at me and the 86 the whole time as they left. So yeah, it still gets even that shameless kind of attention from some people.

Price goes down and they become more attainable to people with less money. These people are more likely to have this be their only car and actually daily drive them as opposed to the original buyer who is more likely to garage keep them and only bring them out on the weekends. As a result, more have "come out of hiding" and you see them more often. This happens with every lower priced sports car (Miatas, S2000's, RX-8's, etc.) and even some higher priced ones.

You make a pile of assumptions about what is "more likely" there. I doubt the lower value has brought more out of the garage since many of these have always been DDs and not weekend toys like most on your list.

Mass market sports cars with similar production volumes to ours being spotted more often on the road as they age is not an assumption, it is a fact. How many C5/C6 Corvettes, S2000's, Z's did you see running around when they were new? I see a lot more now despite the fact that as discontinued models, the total number in existence has nowhere to go but down. I see an NA Miata on the road almost every day despite the fact that I see another partout thread local to the state almost as often as I saw them on the road back in the 90's.

Went to a local food truck festival in my town. Came back from getting food and I got into the car to eat. The guy that parked next to me asked about my car and then a random lady with a kid came up from behind and said how much they liked my car lol

My stock Asphalt 86 never gets attention from anybody except me. That's the way I like it.

You eat in your car?

I sat in mine last night forgetting I had been rolling around on the driveway underneath it. Looked like I dumped a dust pan in there this morning.
