^This. 91 octane is bad enough. Don't do 87. This is not a heavy ass minivan with a big 3.5L V6 that guzzles gas. It's a small lightweight car with a small 4 cylinder engine. It's really not that expensive to use 93 octane. And if you use 87 octane on a regular basis you may end up with costly repairs that will greatly exceed whatever little money you saved at the pump.

Also I'm pretty sure your Honda Odyssey does not take premium fuel so using 87 octane for that is correct.

Also this is your car so wouldn't you be filling up the tank anyway? How would he know what gas you are using?

Manual says 93 recommended, minimum 91 REQUIRED.


Volt, tell the old fogey that it must have a minimum of 91 or it could die.

Thank you all for the replies. I'll make sure the message is put across clear that no lower octane fuel goes in the car.

Sometimes my dad comes around and checks our vehicles out, and out of habit If i wasn't around he might take the car out and throw normal gas in it which was my concern.

If he does it a couple of times it won't hurt a thing. It isn't going to blow up because it had a half tank of 87 run through it. Just don't run regular in it all the time and all will be good.

This motor is a high compression motor and needs the extra octane to avoid pre-detonation. The computer will pull as much timing as possible when using less than required octane gas, as a result gas mileage goes down and you may have additional wear on the engine if the computer cannot pull enough timing to compensate.

It's almost more cost efficient to use the correct gas maximizing MPG and engine life.....appeal to your father's economic side and he won't argue the highest octane you have available in your state as stipulated right in the owner's manual (another appeal to your father, "Look, the guys that built the car state this").

One of the most common misconceptions about premium gas in a nut shell! People presume since it cost more then the station is making more from it. That is not even close to the reality. It costs more because it is more expensive to make. There are many stations that don't even want to carry it because there is a smaller profit margin in it than regular. Gas stations make their money by selling volume not by huge markups and many just do not sell enough premium to get that volume. On the other hand if they don't have it then they lose customers that may have more than one vehicle and use both so they are sort of stuck with it.

Mine has had 87 in it twice. Very first full tank (done by dealer, without me realizing) and during the Colonial Pipeline induced fuel shortage. So far she hasn't turned wheels up in the morning.

As @Tcoat said, just don't do it regularly and if it does happen just dilute it (strengthen it?) by filling the tank at half full the next couple of trips.

Oh, hell, there is nothing special about this car with respect to maintenance. It gets expensive when you start tracking and modding it.

Leave it alone and it's a great little "relatively" inexpensive go kart.

It's not even an affording thing, my dad just prefers to save money. And as to maintenance I have bumper to bumper provided by Toyota due to us financing through Toyota about 10 years ago. The bumper to bumper last a handful of years, I forgot the exact package.

We talked and he was more than happy to fuel it with premium. Most fuels around here are like 93 Octane I believe.
