Finally got my FRS!

After toying around dealer to dealer, i finally got my car. Pretty low quality picture and i'll take better ones tomorrow but I am so excited!

Glad to be a part of the community.

CONGRATULATIONS and WELCOME to ...... The Forum ......

* read the manual (the WHOLE thing)

* take caution, driving on snowy/icy roads, with summer tires

* use only premium hi test gas

* stay back from parking stops

* follow the maintenance manual that came with the car

There ya go ........

Thank you soo much!

A question about the premium gas thing --
my dad is a bit on the cheaper side and is going to insist on putting normal fuel in it (we already do this for our 2007 Honda Odyssey Touring that is meant to heave premium in it)

Will it hurt it to go back and forth? it's hard to reason with him

It's important to use hi test gas because of the relatively high compression ratio. It will run on mid grade but the engine will pull timing, thus less power.

The manual says use premium (hi-test) only, and that's what it says on the filler cap.

Ask your dad, back when he might have had a 1957 Chevrolet, with a 283 cu in engine, with 2 4 barrel carburetors, if he would have used tractor gas (regular) in it ..... ??

Or, if he would have turned the distributor 3 degrees counterclockwise on his old stovebolt blue flame six.

If that don't convince him ....... tell him ol humfrz said that this engine isn't his dad's old Ford flathead V-8 ...... that would burn anything that would pour into the gas tank.

Yep, old men can be hard to reason with fer sure ...... if the above don't work ....... just tell him that ol humfrz, from the forum, said just to use premium all the time......

Don't do it. Like @humfrz said, this engine is designed/tuned for 93 octane. It'll run on California 91 but it pulls timing hard to manage the knock.

It's a terrible idea. Don't do it.

When questions like this come up it's always important to inform yourself on the subject. While it is good to understand that your particular car needs this specific octane rating it might help to also know why any car needs a higher octane rating. I realize it takes time to learn these things but the internet makes all this much easier.

I suggest watching these youtube videos as they will explain in detail octane ratings and why higher octane gas would be needed. Notice on the last video he doesn't suggest to use higher octane unless the car manufacturer specifically states so.

Should I use hi octane premium petrol, and what is octane rating?

The last guy comes off as a bit abrasive but he is definitely light on the BS. I wouldn't put Premium or High Octane fuel in anything unless it was absolutely necessary due to the high cost. Driving high compression vehicles will most likely always require a higher octane though.

There is more information out there on the subject if you are interested but unless your Dad is footing the bill for your car and/or gas I would leave this decision up to you. If he is footing the bill, I'd show him your findings and then do exactly as he says.
