Been there. Done that.

If that didn't work I just ran a #10 sheet metal screw between the post and the clamp. (Don't do this)

OR ....... (now, what could go wrong down here: ......)

Iffen you break the post lose from the battery case, while pounding on it, just smear a large glob of roofing tar over the break.

CAUTION: If the battery acid squirts out during the process, don't scratch your crotch with your hands after you clean it up ......

@Tcoat ....... do you have any distant relatives that came from West Virginia or Kentucky .... ??

Could there be something wrong (loose connection, bad ground) between the starter push button and the wiring to the battery? Could the push button itself be bad?

As far as I know it's only happened in the cold. My original post was Sept 2016, don't remember how cold it was then. But it's cold now for sure. By cold j mean CA cold, 40F.

Only happens rarely.

Have you tried this sequence - hold the button in and then push the clutch pedal in?

The push button just send a signal it doesn't carry any current.
There is no mystery here.

The explanation for the rapid click/weak battery phenomenon is pretty simple. When you turn the key to the start position the battery has enough power to energize the solenoid. Once the contacts in the solenoid close (click #1), the increased demand by the starter causes enough of a voltage drop that the battery can no longer offer enough power to keep the solenoid energized so the solenoid opens/releases (click #2). Once it releases, the battery is no longer being hammered by the starter and once again has enough power to energize the solenoid (click #3).

Rinse/repeat 20 times per second or so. As most have noted, it's a pretty safe bet a new battery will fix it. I would suggest trying to figure out why this one went dead.

edit: The same logic works for the push button starters. The difference is it's the ECU activating the solenoid.
