Europe calls it 'standard', suppose it came over with the French connection y'all had. US has called it Manual Transmission forever.
Back before about 1940 ...... there was no conversation about what kind of transmission. Then from about 1940 to about 1950 only the rich folks had a choice......but, the automatic went with the more expensive cars.

About 1950, the common folk had a choice ...... "standard" or automatic transmission. That's about when I started to recall that people (in Ohio at least) started to refer to a manually shifted transmission as a "standard" shift transmission.

Now, I usually refer to most automobile transmissions as a 5 speed, 6 speed or auto.

If you could string together a logical argument for why MT is a million times better than AT, I'd be more inclined to take your opinion seriously.

The fact of the matter is, there are plenty of people who own these cars. Some bought the MT/AT after one drive with that transmission. Some people *gasp* test drive both and bought the one that fit best with their life style. Some people bought an AT then crashed or traded in for a manual, some did the opposite. Only OP knows what will make him happy in the long term.

i understand that critical thinking is hard sometimes, but you should give it a try. It's awfully rewarding.

Well that is sort of the thing. Back in "the day" there were steel wheels and there were magnesium alloy wheels. Most of the other alloy wheels (i.e. aluminum) were either so rare or expensive we called all alloy wheels "mags". Steel wheels were just "wheels" since the vast majority of the cars on the road had them. Things have sort of reversed and when people talk about "wheels" they are usually referring to alloy and they specify "steelies" when talking about the others. Don't think there are many magnesium wheels made anymore.

You know I can't recall what the last car was that I had hubcaps on.

Meh. They will be back or they won't. Not the first post and run if they aren't back and they will be just as nuts as the rest of us if they do.

One thing for sure they may be more confused then when they asked the question!

OP, it's all been said, in this and many other threads.

I drove stick for 26 years straight. If the AT didn't have a decent manual mode, there would be an argument for a clutch. But, as time marches on, things change and improve.

You don't actually ever need to learn how to drive a stick nowadays, any more than you need to learn how to use an abacus. The world has largely moved on from MT's, even amongst F1 and supercar manufacturers, etc.

Nothing against the MT guys - I was one. But this car is a total fucking ball to drive sans clutch. If a large owner segment still gets their jollies from a manual, so be it. Just don't be bullied or shamed into thinking it's the only and 'right' way to enjoy this car.

Having to shove in a pedal just to change to another gear is akin to climbing on a passenger plane and flapping one's arms to keep it aloft. What's next - go even 'more purist' with a horse drawn 86?

Try them both, ignore the peer pressure, see which one you like best, and buy the AT.

No way it has all been said. This is the 1000th thread on this topic and it still has over 100 replies (and counting). And I'm sure there will be more threads on the same topic next month. Albeit it's all saying the same thing in different ways but there is still much more that can be said.

Yep, the column shift was an innovation over the floor board shift for sure.

However, I said "Now, I usually refer to most automobile transmissions as a 5 speed, 6 speed or auto".

The operative word is "now" .......

Which brings to mind, I had a buddy in HS that had a 1938 Hudson Terraplane. The shifter was a steering column-mounted electric gear pre-selector and electro-mechanical automatic shifting system. It also had the floorboard shifter in case it had problems.

(the advantage was you could seat your date right next to you without getting slapped every time you shifted ..... )

So, what was that called ....... the shift selector was on the column, but the feature was not "standard" equipment, and it could still be shifted with a floorboard shifter ....... ??
