Simple things fail as easily as complex ones. They just do it ... well... simpler. That sound is not coming from the tranny (it is not near scary enough) and that just leaves the shifter and linkage.

Hmmmmmm... I hear a bit of grind the second time he shifts but let's go with your theory so Stang doesn't get too depressed. I don't want his suicide on my conscience.

I promise there us no actual grind in that clip, and never has been despite this issue every time I shift to 4th for the past 10,000 miles. I'm only bringing it up now because it's getting worse and it feels like whatever is loose might wind up completely cock-blocking me from 4th gear entirely.

That is the problem with trying to diagnose by remote control. Different computer setups may give us different results. At least it isn't "what is this smell?"

Well, now that I listen to the video again ...... the cause of the sound in the shifter, is clearly a rod bearing in the engine about to permanently seize up and spin.

The bearing catches when the load on the engine is changed due to shifting the transmission and the sound is transmitted through the transmission to the shift knob. Yep, left hand shifting will set the engine up to spin a rod bearing every time ......

Ask Santa for a new engine.

The only external device that limits movement of the shift linkage is the reverse lockout. The 3-4 gate is right in the center and that centering mechanism, including the springs, is all inside the transmission.

Does it feel like anything is either binding, or loose?

Does it help to angle the lever slightly left or right of center before pulling back into fourth gear?

Update: Ultramaroon is a ****. Probably. I went out today specifically to play around with it - something I have never actually done. And I made a very important discovery. If I pull up on the reverse lockout collar, that eliminates that rattle! So that's definitely where the sound is coming from.

Unfortunately, the reason I say Ultramaroon is a **** is because when I do that, I no longer get that loud, plastic rattle sound... which was masking a grinding noise from the gearbox... Blah.

I guess it's time to make use of my warranty. I guess a new transmission wouldn't be a bad thing - though I hate any time my car is touched for any reason. Will upload a video shortly.

Currently tooling around town in a brand new 2017 Crosstrek...
...because the BRZ is getting a new transmission under warranty after the mechanic at the dealership took it for a quick test drive this morning.

So yay... but I'm worried with all this talk of 4th gear synchro issues that the same problem won't happen again at 80k when I'm no longer under warranty, lol.

Loads of us driving around well over that with no issue. Just the luck of the draw with that first one. Not sure why but there seems to be a huge variation in the quality of these trannys. Some seem to have all sorts of issues and others not a single thing. The variance is way more than I would try to attribute to driving style. Don't see many 15s with issues though so you will probably be fine the second time around.

I think the key is in not shifting aggressively. A few people have gotten past the 100K mark without issue. I bet the silent majority who don't participate in forum and track day shenanigans rarely have problems.

I think you'll be fine if you break the habit of skipping gates. That's the silent killer.
