If a dealer mechanic fucks my shit up, the dealer is responsible.

...They should offer new cars with a "no warranty" option (and discount) for people who don't want to put up with any of that sh*t...

...That alone would probably have sold me a 2017 86 over an AP1 S2000.

...Ignore my wishful thinking if you like. I'll probably have a hard time pulling my personal warranty stunt twice.

That would be great for the occasional loose fastener but a motor or tranny failure?

Some people are prepared to accept that possibility, and would rather handle repairs themselves.

The level of carelessness and negligence present in most dealer techs (and encouraged by their management) is almost unparalleled. I occasionally find just as many new problems in every ancillary they touched in order to get to the broken system, as there was in the broken system itself... That's provided they even fixed the problem, which is nowhere close to guaranteed... And that's if they didn't deny the warranty claim altogether.

I want to throw a punch every time I hear "Oh, I never replace *insert non-reusable part* 'cause you don't need to," and I hear it on a regular basis.

Here are some common dealer mechanic problems...
Connectors broken
Wiring rerouted incorrectly
Wiring fixtures broken
Hydraulic systems leaking*
Exhaust system leaking*
Fasteners over or under torqued
Grease where it shouldn't be
No grease where it should be
Wrong grease on wrong parts
Plastic clips broken or missing
Seals, boots, and other rubber parts torn, or missing
Sensors damaged or contaminated
Internal engine / transmission issues/leaks*
Threads stripped. Threads stripped EVERYWHERE
Fasteners missing, wrong bolts in wrong holes
Air in ALL the lines
No anti-sieze anywhere
RTV everywhere

* = caused by reusing non-reusable parts

You know who is uaually great? ...And always does their job right, never wastes your time, never d*cks you around, hates the techs as much as I do, and usually drops you a discount if you're not a moron? The parts desk.

Dealers are the worst about finding noises.

Is it worth the headache though? This is always the typical response for people who take their cars in for oil changes. "It's free, and if the dealer fucks something up they have to fix it." Wow, that sounds like fun. I just don't get the people that rush to the dealer about every little fucking noise they hear

Ive always done my own work but somewhere along the line decided not to spend anymore weekends lying in the driveway under a car. That's just for me. Anyone can do an oil change. If my car is under warranty I don't do shit. If your dealers are as bad as you say, your time would be better spent talking to a lawyer or the bbb, not bullshitting on a message board.

Why post on this message board, in a tech thread no less, trying to convince others not to do their own work? If you don't want to work on your car anymore, then don't.

Pissing on others' accomplishments is just sad.

Im not pissing on anyones accomplishments, im just questioning the rationale of spending good money on a car/warranty and not holding the manufacturer accountable for defects. Its great to be mechanically motivated and involved with your vehicle, just don't try to rationalize it by saying all dealer mechanics are butchers.

To be clear, whenever discussing paid service I intentionally stay away from that conclusion even though my satisfaction rate is exactly 0%.

I measure my ROI in terms of stress as much as $$$ and do my best to avoid suffering fools including those involved in litigation.

What's ironic is that I intentionally bought mine used to avoid paying the fresh-off-the-boat tax only to accept the "complimentary" CPO extended warranty.
