Odd sound at 6k RPM

On throttle at 6000 rpm, my car makes a noise that sounds like it's coming from below the steering wheel in the dash, or in that general direction. It comes on at about 5900 rpm, is the loudest at 6000-6100, and is gone again by 6500. It is definitely repeatable and happens in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. Probably the other ones too but that'd be a big ticket lol. It sounds like some kind of tapping/knocking but at a much higher frequency than you would hear knock. Almost like a high pitched rattling or scraping noise.

I tried to get a recording of it but can't hear it over the regular engine noise. Did a good bit of searching and didn't find anything that sounded the same.

Is this a normal sound from these engines? A VVT thing or something?

Next time while it's happening try tapping your clutch pedal. Just a little tap. May not be it but if it affects the sound then I can explain that one. 6K is a little high for that specific resonance though.

May also be a loose bolt in your engine bottom cover (skid plate), or one of the heat shields on your exhaust.

Nope, doesn't seem to be the slave cylinder spring (assuming that's what you were thinking). Tapping the clutch has no effect. Nor does the reverse lockout seem to be the culprit.

You're probably right, if it's not a common issue it's probably just a heat shield or something. My first oil change I'll look everything over.

If it's something in the engine, which it doesn't sound like, it'll probably get worse. If it it does I'll have it looked at, got a lot of warranty left lol.

Ha! Yeah, I was thinking exactly that. Mine sings sometimes at around 4K. Don't remember exactly.

Let us know when you find it. Good luck.

Both, it seems to be related to engine speed only, not wheel speed.

Does your car still have the sound generator tube?

...Because that tube pipes some intake resonance into the cabin in the passenger footwell, under the dash. It can sound pretty strange...

Good thought.

If you have one and it5 hasn't been plugged, you might consider sticking a cork in it.

Found it! Just a loose bolt on the header heat shield. Crazy to me that I could hear it in the cab over tall the mentioned intake noise.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone

How it feels when you find it and fix it.

If I were to have an issue with a brand new car, the dealer would be my first stop. Not a message board. Lol. Either way, good job on the find.

I guess you've never had a sloppy mechanic fuck up your shit.
