Given the fact that it's black, I'd like to think that I helped make you pull the trigger

Probably not, but very cool either way. Congrats!

Hehe, actually your post definitely helped me over the edge. I really appreciate you sharing your story and the pics! Your setup on both the Nissan and FRS are right up my alley.

Thanks again everyone, it's super cool finding a community of like minded enthusiasts!

I had every intention of buying a BRZ, and then I test rode a WRX. I was literally there to buy the BRZ! Emotional? Well, once the turbo kicked in, I was sold, even though I like the look of the brz better. That, and awd so you can use it all year in NY. The BRZ is still one of my favorite cars ever. I will get one at some point. The other chance for a new car ended up being the vette I got this summer. You can probably understand that one. The car is sick.

My FR-S is all set for winter thanks to some snow tires. 40 years ago AWD wasn't quite as common as front-engine, rear wheel drive, and folks managed to survive winters worse than any we've had in recent years in their rwd cars. No denying AWD is better for getting moving and more control at lower speeds, but it's still not capable of beating physics, and I'm not letting where I live dictate my car choice unless I know my car's going to be buried to an unusable point during the winter. And at that point, I'll probably just stay home, anyway.

My first car was a 61' Valiant when I got my license in 1996. Then I got a 93 Supra, then a 240SX and a Civic EX, then back to a 96 Supra, then a Lancer. Obviously I fell in love with the Supra's, but I remember thinking they were bigger than I thought they would be when I finally got one. For some reason I thought a Supra was the size of a RX7...another car I was in the market for back then. I loved the hips, rear and shape of the 2+2 seater. It was heavy at 3400lbs, but low and wide, so it stuck to the ground, yet it always felt heavy. Maybe it was the fact that my first car was 2750lbs, or the fact that every other car I owned was around that same weight

Flash forward to last winter, and I wanted a newer used car. I own a Ducati Monster, so I figured I have the speed, so why not just get something practical? But I am an enthusiast, so I wanted to get something sporty. I was thinking AWD and/or turbo and a sedan--a SUV is too big. The WRX was too aggressive looking to me; I don't care for the new ones, or the previous few generations. Luxury cars like the BMW, while attractive, are just too flashy and all about status. That type of luxury has never been attractive to me, and seems like either a waste of money, or like it doesn't fit anyone who doesn't own their own home.

Anyways, I eventually thought a Jetta GLI was a great choice. It was simple and classy looking, adult, without the wannabe status of owning a luxury car. It was sporty too in looks over the standard Jetta and had the turbo engine and a nice looking interior, so I decided to take it for a test drive, all the while thinking the BRZ was sweet looking, but just not practical--not sensible.

I took the Jetta for a test drive and the size was a huge turn off. Compared to all the 2700lb vehicles it felt heavy. The inside felt huge. I felt like I was sitting on top of it not in it. The interior materials actually felt cheaper than I thought they would. Cheaper than the BRZ I sat in a few days prior, and yet the Jetta was suppose to have a nice interior and people online said the BRZ's was cheap; I had the opposite feeling. My fiancé echoed my thoughts too. She agreed that the power was nice on the Jetta, but it didn't feel fast like everything was dampened by the sedan softness. And the handling was sluggish--not light and sharp. The lancer had been surprisingly sharp for what it was, so this seemed like a step back.

We walked over to the BRZ dealership and sat back in the BRZ. Immediately we both were like yea, money, this just felt right. Then she said, why be sensible? We aren't having kids, she said and, you don't commute far at all, and you almost never drive anyone else around except for me, and you can always borrow the folks truck for trips to the snow. She was right. Took the BRZ for a test drive, and that only sealed the deal that much more. It is definitely perfect for me in looks, price and experience. The good gas milage and two plus two seats make it all the practical I needed it to be. Everything else was hitting all the check boxes and all the senses.

Life, the universe, cars and me.

I occasionally buy a lottery ticket knowing full well the futility of such a purchase but it gives me the chance to dream......

I have about 350 hours of airtime flying hang-gliders. An interesting thing about hanging around flyers is the brand of wing is rarely mentioned. There are basically 3 levels of wing: beginner (billow cruisers) intermediate and advanced. Within each category wings from different manufacturers are quite similar. When standing around talking about flying we talked about how we snagged that thermal, how we beat our best distance, the awesomeness of flying. The hardware was fairly irrelevant.

The biggest failing for me of the 86 et al is that in the grand scheme of things it is a (relatively) inexpensive Jap car. I see a Ferrari and I am a little envious. I have driven a 360 Modena around a race track (140 mph is kind of quick!) and Ferraris have no appeal for me at all but I am still envious. That is, even if I won the lottery I wouldn't buy a Ferrari but I still want the status of a Ferrari. When I go to the local Porsche track day I am faster than most/all of the Porsches but they still get to drive home in their German engineered machines. My BRZ does everything I want from a car except for my perception of how others see it. Superficial I know but I guess I am at least partly human. And the fact that I'm bored and not quite sober probably doesn't help.

Well, considering that the majority of Ferrari drivers are guys with too much money for their own good and absolutely no knowledge on cars at all, and that they automatically consider themselves professional F1 drivers once they receive their car, idk if I'd even want the status.

My BRZ gets looks all the time, and if you mod it cleanly you won't be seen as just another wannabe jap tuner, with their hat on backwards and all. The lovely thing about the twins is that they don't subscribe to any predisposed car cliches or stereotypes; they genuinely just look like cool little cars.

I think having a car with a strong community like the FRS/86/BRZ is enough to buy one. Read the threads and comments in the forum- they will make you laugh, angry and everything in between- that in itself should be the ultimate emotional trigger to buy this car!

This is so true. I cannot tell you how many people have commented on my car. Just totally random non car people love the BRZ. And the car people all think it is some type of exotic or something.

I don't want status. I want people to look at my car and say it looks cool, but I want the thieves and bad guys to not see it at all because it is a cheap rwd econobox.
