no way you were driving in the 2nd pic with the stock tires.. I got stuck in similar circumstances.. had to turn back (180 drift back) park the car, and call a friend for a ride home.
Those tires are useless in any snow.. maybe the frist pic you can slide around fine (with nannies off otherwise they'll be going crazy) but i refuse to believe you were able to make it from point A to point B with those weather conditions in the 2nd photo (5-10 cm of snow) with the stock prius tires. |

Did you get the Michelin's or the Bridgestone's stock? My FRS came with Bridgestone Turanza EL-400's and they do have some traction in light snow. I discovered this a few years ago driving to Atlanta when they suddenly got snow for the first time in a hundred years. lol

Very soon after buying my BRZ in 2013, we had a snowstorm that left a sheet of crunchy ice everywhere, but only an inch or so of snow.
Just to see how bad things were with the car as is (stock tires), I decided to just take one lap around the block with TC on. With the TC ON, the ABS was working all of the time non-stop. I made it fine, got back in the driveway (barely) and got out. The smell of overheating (like hot brakes/clutch) was obvious when I got out. The system was overworking SO hard that the ABS and brakes were noticeably hot. The car was completely undriveable in certain places with the nannies On, but I could get through it no problem manually with a little throttle steering. In my opinion: This is because the system is "unstable" when the parameters are so far at the end of reality. This is called a "corner case" in control system analysis. Dont drive the car in snow on Stock Primacys. Not only is the car dangerous because the compound is useless below freezing, but it does unpredictable things when it gets confused. I'll bet that the coefficient of friction of the tire compounds drops to below what the control system was ever designed to do. See what "Ice mode" does to you at highway speed when there isnt really ice. /opinion Directly from the TireRack website for the Primacy HP: "While Primacy HP tires are designed to offer reliable traction in dry and wet conditions, they are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice." The low rolling friction material (Green X) get too hard at low temps.

Having had the seed of doubt planted by justatroll, I just took another look at my tires, and they are indeed Primacy HPs. I thought they were normal GT All-season Primacys, but they're GT summers after all. So you guys can throw the eye at me too for driving in somewhat wintry conditions today on tires not meant to do the job. Believe me, I know better than to do such a thing, but uh....oopsie? I have to wait til next Monday to get the snows thrown on, so I may have to park it if it gets below freezing and/or snows any sort of substantial amount between now and then.
