Should I replace or repair a new tire?

Got a matching one in my tire. I left it in. Been over 1000 more miles with it.

They are not going to patch it, it is too close to the edge.

Any particular reason why you chose to leave it in rather than plug it using a kit from the store?

It's about 3/4 inch from the sidewall. I definitely will have it taken off the rim and inspected.



Did you use a sticky rope style repair? I need to make a 2 hour drive in a week and if I can't have it safely repaired/replaced by then, I'll most likely use one of these kits until I can figure it out.

That is exactly what I used. Many times.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

It holds air, already wore the head off, lots of tread, and no warranties.

Not suggesting anyone else attempt this... I am a professional. (at getting flat tires)

If your not losing air just leave it alone. If you are just find one of the thousands of these that are out there and buy one.
This same situation happened to me. But I was in the financial spot to just sell the remaining 3 tires and buy new tires and get rid of these.
A repair job may hold it may not as has been stated. Its all about how much your willing to risk.

Got one in my left front on the original set. Drove it bald. Also not recommending it but lazy is as lazy does.

I agree, this is why I also say to move the tire to the rear. If you do get a blowout the front is less preferable than the rear.

Just because we haven't heard about it happening on the internet could be because very few people repair their own tires and most places won't do that repair for fear of legal issues.

I carry one in each car with a portable compressor. When my friends car had a similar puncture as the OP I really didn't want to risk fixing it and then something crop up like a blowout. For myself I'd most likely repair it with that kit and move it to the back. If it were a car I was driving not anyone else in my family. That's just me though. So like he said it's kind of up to you.

I'm taking the wheel to a tire shop to have it inspected. Hoping there isn't any excessive damage and it will last until I decide I want new (different) tires.

On a side note, is it safe to put a towel over a jack & jack stands to avoid scratching off paint when jacking a car up?

If you are jacking up with the stock jack, it goes under the pinch weld, I really don't think you need to worry about scratching too much. Honestly, a towel won't do much other than rip. I have a pinch weld adapter for my floor jack and I've never really had an issue.

The tire shop is going to patch the tire (est. about 10 minutes for the repair). It seemed as though they hadn't even heard of the "mushroom" plug-patches that the internet says is the "only way to properly repair a tire." He seemed pretty confident that the patch would last for the life of the tire but would it be a bad idea to put a little rubber cement where the hole is to prevent any moisture from getting into the hole causing rust in the tire reinforcements?

I was thinking more for jack stands because the stock jack has already scratched a bit of paint off and I want to protect against potential rust areas.

Somewhere here I've posted a pic of my custom hockey puck jack stand inserts. I'll update this post after work if no one beats me to it.
