Buying salvage BRZ

Hi,
I am thinking about buying a salvage BRZ as a project car to fix and hopefully modify. The auction house states that the car starts but "ENGINE KEEPS CUTTING OUT". I am wondering if the cracks in air intake could be causing this or is it something else. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Could be the intake since the sensor is probably messed up.
Damage looks minimal with low probability of structural or engine damage.
If you can get it for the right price I would go for it.

I'm not worried about the visible damage as it doesn't seem bad at all. It's just the engine that worries me as it would cost me couple grand to source and fit a replacement which obviosuly i wouldn't really want to be doing. I guess that's the risk of buying cars at salvage auctions

Yes that is indeed the risk. From the visible damage though it doesn't appear the engine or even the suspension took much of a hit (if any hit at all).

Never hit a pot hole? The structure and engine are not slopping around in a fluid inside a nice solid container like your brain. They can take a hit as long as it isn't direct and starts buckling things. YA there could be some minor loosening but not massive destruction. Take a look at the bar running from the driver's tower to the firewall. If that was bent at all you sure can't tell from the picture.

Bar looks to be in a decent shape and not enough to worry me at all. It can be pulled into shape on a jig if couple cm out.

I'm thinking that the engine problems is either the airbox as discussed or the ecu being knocked as it's located on the passanger side as far as I know.

Complete guess on my part but I am willing to bet it is just the MAF since the intake appears to broken right where it attaches. Could even simply have come unplugged. Doubt it is the ECU that was damaged since there are no moving parts to be affected by impact.

I was wondering why the engine looked different than mine, then I realized this was a RHD haha.

Looks like the car has a set of coilovers. Nice little addition if you decide to pick it up.

The engine is cutting out because the intake is open after the mass air flow sensor. Look at the gap after the clamp right here:

This is letting in unmeasured air and is why the motor is cutting out. With how small that hit is, I'd bet money on the engine running fine with the intake reconnected.

Just be aware that you are looking at over $4000USD in parts alone just for what I can see is damaged. Google tells me that's about £3200. Labour extra if you aren't able to do all of the work yourself. If you plan to do the work yourself, watch B is for Build on Youtube for a good idea of what you are getting yourself into.
