I didn't look much at the private sales as most I saw were modified or just kind of beat up.
There's always gonna be stupid people asking too much for their cars just like any other affordable sports car. People get into something they can't actually afford and then they learn a hard lesson when they can't sell a car because they expect to make their money back with an unrealistic asking price.

Mine was $19,500 for a certified 20k mile monogram from a toyota dealer. The one I missed scooping up was $16,000 for a 15k mile base at a BMW dealer. Meanwhile, some idiot has had a 2015 special edition yellow one on craigslist for the past 3 months or so, asking $24,5. Didn't even bother to list the mileage. Another has a 2013 with a turbo kit for $24k and doesn't understand that their mods don't add jack squat for value. Those prices haven't moved at all and those cars will probably still be listed a year from now.

I have seen a lot of younger guys buy these and get roped in to high interest rate loans and they never pay down the principal. Then they want someone to "take over payments" or "sell for what they owe" and they're just naïve to how financing works. It is sad.

Seems like every month Advanced Auto or Autozone have a filter/oil sale: 5 quarts synthetic + filter for $30-35.

Stoptech SP brake pads are $54 for the front and $50 for the rear at Tirerack. Liter of ATE200 brake fluid is $21.

Synthetic trans and diff oil is similarly cheap ($40 for Valvoline full synthetic).

Tires are cheap in stock sizes (e.g., $250 for set of Sumitomo all seasons, $265 for set of Firestone MP summer tires, etc.)

There have been plenty of complaints against the Twins over the years, but this is the first I've seen a complaint about maintenance costs lol. Not sure what cars people are coming out of, but for a sporty car it doesn't get much cheaper than this.

I suspect that an informed buyer is a bit leery of used FR-S/BRZ's knowing what kind of knobs some owners are.

Canada dollaroos suck right now is pretty much the basis of that complaint.

The only way to save money on that front is buy a boring car.

Unless this is your first car, and mommy and daddy have been paying the bills and shielding you from cruel reality.

Yeah seems like more of a Canadian dollars complaint rather than a car-specific complaint

Ya, someone had a TRD 1.0 here in California for 25k or 26k on Craigslist as well. For me, I was just unsure about buying one that was from a private individual due to possible abuse. I know that buying one from a dealer doesn't rule that out, but a lease return with a warranty sure helps ease those fears. Congrats on your momogram as that was the other version I was looking into. Settled on the Series 10 because I couldn't get over how beautiful the color is.

I'm necroing a semi-old thread, but thought I would add my input..

I had a 2013 with 13k miles on it. KBB Private was close to 18k. I listed it for 6 weeks everywhere, starting at 18k and moving down to 17k. No bites. A couple of texts, but nothing serious. No one came to look at the car. It was in great condition.

And then I figured everything out after reading a bunch of the Facebook buy/sell groups., something that OP found out too.

people buying the cars are in their early 20s, and want to get a loan from the dealer. This represents about 95% of the market for the car. These people don't want to go through the hassle of getting a private loan thru a bank of credit union. And they definitely don't have 17k in cash.

I sold my 2013 with 13k miles to car max for 15 grand. They listed it for 19k a week later (the price you pay for not being a bank I guess).

The piece of advice I want to give everyone: Please don't chop your car up, modify it horribly, and then expect to sell it. At all. Most people don't want to buy a modified car, but with the current market for the car, there is like 0 chance you are going to sell that car unless you are listing AT kbb. Even then, I still think you'll find it tough to find a seller.

TLR; if you are trying to privately sell your car, good luck. It's tough, there's no market.

If you have RB, SC/Turbo, and a massive wing - and you're asking 22k .. you're done. You screwed up the second you cut into your fenders. If you had been slightly modified, you would have made it out alright by parting out. But if you cut your fenders.. you're taking a huge loss.

Have you seen the resale value of WRXs?

Same manufacturer, same price point, completely different outcome.
