Rear ended while sitting in traffic

Hi All,

My car was rear ended today while driving home from work. I was stopped in traffic. No one was injured. I called the police and have filed a claim with both insurances. The other party's insurance is sending an adjuster tomorrow.

This is my first collision and I have a few questions.

Are there any other steps I should take regarding insurance, police, etc.?
What would you say the extent of the damage is?
Can you recommend a reputable body shop in the DFW area?

Thanks for your help!

nope, you've done everything. Let your insurance company fight it out with the morons insurance company.

That sucks. Good thing the other person has insurance. As said before you did pretty much all your work.
The next thing is to take it to a body shop of your choicing. Give them your insurance info and they can take care of the rest. You can either wait tell they tell you their "recommended" body shop or not.

As far as damage wise looks like trunk, bumper, exhaust, possible tail lights. All fixable.

Now that's just too damn bad ......

Like said above, let the insurance companies/body shop figure out the damage.

The most important thing you need to know is that the insurance company is allowed to suggest places that will perform the repairs but ultimately, they cannot tell you where to get your car fixed. This is the law.

You are allowed to pick a body shop of your choosing, so pick a good one if you know of one. Also, don't let them stick you with low quality parts. If you want all official OE parts, it may be some more paperwork and back-and-forth between the shop and the insurance company but if you want it, you get it in most cases. Remember, you did nothing wrong and the other driver and insurance company are obligated to make you whole and fully fix any wrong doing. The shop might have a headache over it but all that it really costs you is potentially having to wait a little longer for the process to all work out.

Thank you for your inputs.

Quick update - Insurance originally estimated about $3k for repairs. This includes
  • exhaust pipe & muffler
  • bumper cover
  • reverse lamp
  • left tail lamp
  • trunk (& RT hinge)
  • name plates
  • stone guards? (LT and RT)
  • tow eye caps (LT & RT)
  • paint
  • labor

The car is now at the shop. They have removed the bumper cover which revealed more damage .
What are your thoughts on the amount of work needed at this point?

Given that you're in Texas with awesome carry regs, I'm assuming that you shot and killed the other motorist.

Call me jealous - in Canada, pepper spray is illegal.

In all seriousness, that is just fucked. In my area, they just turned a normal, low speed never accident intersection into a three way stop last week, for no good reason. I've seen people blow through this every time I've since been near it, and I'm now real heavy on the rear view mirror expecting damage such as yours.

Hope everything turns out well for you.

That looks like a lot more than 3K. I'm guessing at least twice that.

Do not settle for anything less than completely repaired. It's doable.

Ask someone here about diminished value claims. I'm not an expert.

+1 I thought the same thing when I saw the 3k estimate.. I got into a minor accident (merging vehicle swiped me) and just repairing the fender + painting that front driver corner area was 3k lol.

They can only write what they can initially see. Once it's torn down they can supplement/reinspect. I'd say close to double the initial estimate
