The Subaru warranty covers some wear parts that Toyota does not but otherwise they are almost identical. The only thing that would cost $4K to fix would be a whole engine and odds are the extended warranty would find some way to blame you and avoid paying anyway.

The internet tells me that they come with the same standard warranty. 3yr/36K bumper to bumper, 5yr/60K powertrain. I bought the 5yr/60K bumper to bumper warranty.

You would be amazed how much some of this stuff costs to replace when you're paying dealer prices for new parts. I got a new seat cover because mine had a rip in it. $800 each. The boring OEM wheels? $360 each. A new headlamp assembly? $800 each.

I was only given information about the 10 year extended warranty. Out of curiosity, how much was the 5yr/60k bumper to bumper warranty? Also, are warranty prices dictated by the manufacturer or do different dealerships offer them at different prices?

I didn't even know there was a 10 year extended warranty. It wasn't even an option when I bought my car, or I probably would have bought it.

Warranty prices and specific coverage are both highly negotiable. In Feb of 14 I didn't have much room to argue on the price of the car, but my wife tore the warranty guy up one side and down the other during that negotiation. I sat back and watched. I don't remember how much I paid, but it definitely wasn't what they were asking.

But what are the odds of a successful warranty claim on a wheel or headlight assembly? These things usually need to be replaced for non warranty damage not because they fail. Even the seat covers could be denied based on it is a wear item.

The extended warranties are not held by Toyota or Subaru they are third party and that is why they are negotiable. My wife sells them for RVs and they are a huge revenue source for any dealer. They are also usually not worth having in the long run.

It was an example of how expensive buying OEM parts from the dealer was, but you're right. My seat cover only got replaced because the rip was in a non-wearing area.

I'm reading through the FRS Break-in guide thread and read a post saying that a manufacturer can look at the ecu records and deny a warranty claim if the engine hasn't been broken in by the book (i.e. under 4k rpm for 1000 miles). Have you ever heard of something like this really happening?

No. I wouldn't worry to much about that. The ECU does not have a massive storage capacity so doubt they can go back too far anyway.

My very first question was "Is the extended warranty through some third party or is it a REAL Subaru Warranty?".
The service manager and the salesperson assured me it was with Subaru NOT some third party.

So I have 100k, 10 year bumper to bumper on my car from Subaru.
So far I have had both rear axles replaced due to the clicking noise (came back in less than 20k miles)
They removed & replaced the entire front cover due to a minor leak.
They also replaced one front headlight module due to moisture getting inside.

There are always exceptions to any norm! If I had the 100K warranty I would have gone through it and never had a claim. So I guess the moral is that experiences may vary.
