You get used to the GT speedo dial. At first I found it hard to read, but now I'm fine with it.

Hell, it's SO much better than the 164 my brother drives, where the needle doesn't even reach the numbers or lines. And neither he nor anyone who drives the car has gotten a speeding fine (and that's with a sonorous Italian V6 for encouragement!):

I suppose if it's that much of an issue though, there are solutions. GPS unit?

LOL @ the needle not reaching the numbers!

Just for us US folks who don't have the GT spec, can you show me what you mean about not having the digital speedometer with a picture? All pictures I've ever seen show a digital readout.

I'm glad Scion included the digital speedo. Honestly, had it not been there, that may have been enough to cause me not have bought the buy the car.

I know I'd probably get "used to it" but since this is my DD, a large percentage of the time is spent under 55MPH and the "operating range" on the analog speedo is just too small.

I also sent through a letter. I'm just after a speedometer that is easy to read, not a free upgrade. I don't think it's too much to ask to be honest, it looks as though they designed the cluster with the intention of having a digital readout, and then stripped it for cost savings, not realising you can't tell the fucking speed without it!

Just received a reply!:

Dear James,

Thank you for your recent email received by the Toyota Customer Experience Centre.

We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your comments on the position of the speedometer in the 86 GT. All vehicles prior to release, go through the Australian Design Rules (ADR) to ensure they meet Australian safety requirements.

However, we have taken this opportunity to forward your email on to our Product Management Department, who will collate all such material for consideration when any model is under review for design and/or specification changes.

Thank you for contacting Toyota and allowing us the opportunity to respond.

Kind Regards

Hi Mike,

I had two test drives, one for about 10 minutes and the other for 15-20. I noticed the issue on the first test drive and then confirmed that it was a problem for me on the second test drive.

I am sure it does get easier when you are used to it, but its still not exactly easy to read - it does look like an afterthought.

BTW, which dealership do you work at? I am not happy with the one I've been dealing with - it seems some dealerships just don't know how to treat customers unless they buy the car off the lot!

You could also fit a cheap (sub $100) aftermarket digital speedo. Not the classiest option but it will fix your issue.

I dunno, maybe I'm the only one but..... Once you get used to driving your car and knowing what revs = what speed etc its easy to determine what basic speed you are doing. I very rarely look at my speedo, I'm too busy looking out for other ****head drivers who spend more time concentrating on their dash than what's happening on the road.

Thank you for the picture. I'm very surprised that they cut this out.

From an electronics perspective, the micro controller for both gauge clusters will be identical. Someone at AU corporate pulled it out just to make the trims "feel" cheaper or better depending on the price you pay. The cost savings would be less than $5 to Toyota.

This was entirely marketing BS. The plus side is that you'll be able to swap clusters if you need to.
