Freevalve by Koenigsegg

I'm really surprised by all the benefits that this technology claims. Fewer components needed, lower cost, better emissions and power. Wow.

How long until Subaru's get this tech?

I'm not sure about the "less parts". They basically replace the belt-driven cam gears, shafts and lobes with electric-valve units that operates individually.

Every time that guy opens his mouth I am impressed. He really knows what is going on and not just the guy with the money who runs the place.

They've been running a modified Volvo with a free valve head forever. From I've read, problem free as well.

So basically the valvetrain goes from mechanical to electromechanical. Primary benefits mostly related to various functions enabled with the ability to control every valve individually.

If the combustion engine has a future beyond a possible/probable shift to electric power , I could see this tech hitting mainstream. So many advantages, and looks so very feasible for large scale production. Shame this didn't get into mainstream development 30 years ago.

If the boxer engine can be shrunk in size then double wishbone suspension can finally fit in a cost effective manner?

I saw this a few days ago. Only question I had was what happens if there is electrical fail? Does the valve hit the cylinder like it does if a timing belt broke?

No, the valve just stays shut.

This tech will become mainstream only when emissions regulations drive manufacturers to adopt it.

The off state for a valve would need to be the position that leaves the valve least vulnerable in the event of failure.

It depends, it looks like the head is only 2-3 inches shorter.

To me it sounds like it saves a lot of cost, space, and weight.

I wonder if the solenoids are able to actuate smoothly. I'm kinda used to that sound and feel you know is produced from cam lobes opening the valves.
