Easy fix for oil cooler line problem:

swap to the 13-16 airbox.

The 17 autos still have the 13-16 airbox... so there's no reason it wouldn't be a direct swap. Boom, there's the space you need.

This sux. I wonder, if there is/will be any LEDs replacements with better CRI. Low CRI is a "problem" across the whole LED industry and LEDs with a good Color Rendering Index is relatively rare and expensive.

Auto also has the old unmodified engine.

Of course, but the differences in the airbox are minor - and we already know the 13-16 airbox can flow enough air to make 250-300hp on a supercharger with a different filter.

I just wanted to offer this as an idea for a simple / cheap way to get rid of the problem.

Still working on a proper solution.

A good idea, but doesn't necessarily mean it's the proper solution. Something designed correctly is far more beneficial to the community.

Absolutely - won't disagree with you there. It just opens up your options from an individual owner perspective. If you're in a rush to get a cooler on a '17. It'd be the fastest way to get access to the large existing market of oil cooler solutions for the chassis.

Do the K&N (or similar) drop-in air filters work for the 17MT? Or will it require new filter dimensions?

I don't know. Subaru did change the dimensions / design of the filter for '17 MT, but I don't know if it was in a way that changes compatibility.

Or I could put on an aftermarket intake.

Unfortunately that means more money, and the new stock intake works rather well.

I've never taken the easy way out before, and am not about to start now.

Hmm...Doesn't sound like it's gonna work. I was hoping to bring the filter to the dealer when I pick up the car. Hopefully they release a compatible one before the end of december.
