Map content update 2013 Subaru BRZ

I have been looking into updating my map content via SDHC card that comes with the stock head unit. After doing some research I found that it is possible to pay for an updated version of the maps using subaru's utility for mac/windows but me being someone who used to download my music from lime wire and watch free movies on letmewatchthis.com, I know there has got to be a way to do with for free. I was given a 2017 Subaru Outback as a loaner car and noticed that it had a SD card for its maps as well and it appears that in the utility application the maps all run the same software. I already purchased a sd card from Walmart and tried copying the data in different formats (fat32 etc.) not using the utility but could not get it to operate on my BRZ. However, there is a way to back up your map content on the utility so when I get back from work I will try to backup the data from the outback and transfer it to my brz card.

There is one alternative that I may try if this does not work. If you bring your car to the dealership and tell them that your gps is not functioning correctly and losing signal all the time, they may replace it at no charge. That being said my brz is a 2013 model and the 3 year warranty has expired so they may charge me for that. That will be my final attempt, I'm not going to pay for a map update that is close to $200 when I could just go buy another head unit for a little bit more that has new map data and an rca output for subs (thanks Subaru for making it an easy subwoofer install) take note that it's not easy at all unless your a car audio expert

If anyone else has some input for me and has tried similar methods of doing this please leave a comment, I would appreciate it. It kinda sucks buying a car 2013 model car that came with 2011 maps

Vehicle:
2013 Subaru BRZ Limited 2.0
M/T
Stock as hell
Revworks UEL headers
Invidia Overpipe & Catless Frontpipe
Perrin 2.5" resonated catback - not mounted

If you have a 14,15,16,17 BRZ please do me a favor and copy the SD files to your computer and email them to me. That may work on my car. Just let me know

The files are encrypted by the update utility, so they can't be copied. I called Subaru of America to politely express my dissatisfaction that my 2013 car came with 2011 maps and they offered to refund me via check if I purchased updated maps. I did end up paying the $149 or something for the map update, sent verification of my purchase and received a check a few weeks later for the full cost of the update.

Did you go through a dealership or through the 800 number. It does disappoint me that you have to pay that kind of money to update a feature on the $20,000 car I bought. Apple doesn't make you pay for iOS 10, you shouldn't have to pay for a navigation update. And my dealership in Baton Rouge, LA has shown very little support to me after having brought my car to be serviced 5+ times for an oil leak due to manufacturer defects. They don't even answer the phone when I call. So I might just call the main number or if you still have the representative you spoke with regarding the confirmation of purchase and repayment, just attach that to this thread if that's no problem. I really don't want to go through the hassle of trying to copy files that might not even work on my vehicle. Thanks for the advice and let me know

It's been like this forever with OEM sat-navs. There's a company called Navteq that has pretty much monopolized the OEM car sat-nav map business. Not sure if Nokia still owns them.

At least you get a Panasonic industrial grade SD card with this car. My old VW used a map DVD from Navteq and when it got scratched from just normal handling, it's $200 bucks for a new one. They also discontinued support so that car's map is forever stuck at 2009.
