Saw a picture of a grmn market 86 with a much different intake set-up. I wonder what the reasoning was for the use of a market specific intake manifold?

They are an experimental/test car as much as anything so probably all kinds of different things have been on and off them for trials. All depend on how far into the development the pic was taken.

That's not a market designation, that's the GAZOO race car. Their intake manifold used variable-length runners. I don't know exactly how it works, but the air basically had two different paths it could take, depending on engine speed and load.

I still have a dual runner intake manifold in the garage (never ended up finishing that project...) - typically it's just two sets of runners with a butterfly valve on the intake side of the short runners and shared air volume on both ends (they merge near the head, and both open to the same plenum). One of my cars had the same manifold installed from the factory, the other was intended to be a project until someone backed into me while I was parked...

It was simple and effective, both at low RPM and high(er) RPM, where the shorter runner would be opened. I'd guess it was worth 10% or more power on the top end (hard to know, HP hadn't leveled off at the revlimiter). It also helped power through the midrange, but I don't remember details. The sound when the secondaries opened up was always worth a big grin too.

I think you could go dual runner on this car with a rather interesting manifold design. The manifold spacers appear to provide gains, so there may be merit... but who knows how much.

Indeed. Would love to see more data on it for it's potential to enhance performance.

So... if you ever look at your stock intake you'll notice a pretty strong crash beam exactly where that intake would go. The placement of the intake makes sense... but no crash beam. And that manifold does look gorgeous.

would net us some gains... hopefully... that's a gazoo 86 btw

I doubt any intake manifold will make gains on its own. Probably just shift the torque curve around.

A good polished manifold should in theory (correct me if im wrong) flow more allowing for more top end power? Even if it is just a measly 5hp it's still another piece of the puzzle to incorporate into a n/a or boost build.

Variable runners is way to go for NA I believe. So many interesting designs in the industry and we have the space for that... Fingers crossed but I have never seen aftermarket one for any car.
