I like the MID, but I'll give him credit about refinement about he engine. However i will still argue that most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. And if op were to use the money he would spend on a trade in to modify his car i.e. More power, I'm sure he'd be way happier.

If your 16 doesn't have push start, navigation, automatic ac, etc and you will be upgrading to 17 premium model, it might make sense based on your budget. But I would just get a properly installed FI upgrade plus maybe nice wheels and tires.

Is this true the 2017 BRZ has a bunch of "FAKE" glossy carbon fiber pieces in random locations?????
What else are those fake interior add-on?

If you want a 17 model so bad I would wait to snatch up a Performance Package model or better yet the Series.Yellow!

With this refresh, it's like they got bored, and started just adding stuff for no reason.

Its like when you have a project at home that you are working on. First you do the basics, then you add more and more until suddenly you realize you've overcomplicated everything and made it worse than it was. There are already too many different surfaces on the interior. Now they've added fake carbon fiber (on a $25,000 budget coupe? Come on!) and piano black trim. There are just too many materials inside and it doesn't work well. I love the idea of the driver information display and everything it shows, but just sticking a square display inside of those round gauge faces without actually redesigning them just looks terrible.

Even the exterior changes I'm not a huge fan of. The bumper isn't bad, but it's starting to turn into every other car with way too many scoops and strakes and angles. The rear tail lights are interesting, but I think they're too busy and less elegant (the same goes for the front headlights, by the way, though I'd love the LED projectors.)

I think all of the mechanical changes are good. I just think they were told they needed to refresh the looks of the car, and didn't know what to do, so they just picked random parts to change and the result is... messy.

I would wait until you qualify for the Subaru Guarantee Trade and see if you have any equity after you reach your first year. By the time you reach it, you will have plenty of options to go with as mentioned before with the PP or Series.

I don't think it's worth taking a loss for incremental improvements. Save the money for mods.

On most car forums you see the same phenomenon: new model or refresh comes out, most current owners don't like the look of the new changes, while non-owners do. Hardly surprising given the current owners' investment in and habituation to the older version. Miata.net provided a perfect illustration of this at the time of the launch of the ND.

As someone with no skin in the game who saw both up close at a dealership in the same CWP the other day, I'd gladly drop the extra $2k to acquire a '17 over the discounted '16s on the basis of external appearance alone - the '17 has a more modern design with a better integrated and more fully detailed front end, more attractive and contemporary lighting all round, wheels that look less cheap, and a far more appealing rear spoiler. But would I take an $8k hit to trade a 16 in for it? Not unless there was some really dramatic improvement in the way it drove. That's just my opinion of course, but it would be interesting to poll first-gen owners vs. non-owners here to see if there are group differences.

I traded my 2013 FRS for a 2017 BRZ and I think it was well worth the upgrade.

Not sure I would feel the same coming from a 2016 BRZ though.

The Yellow Stitching. Also potentially better resale value if you take care of it.

I have a 2016 BRZ Premium that I bought new. I thought about this, and concluded the hit from depreciation would be too high to justify it.

Instead, keep the 2016 and look out for second hand 2017 suspension components, and differentials. Swap them in. Those probably comprise the majority of the improvement (except the stability control changes).

Then, sit back and enjoy the updates, while keeping your pure, unadorned steering wheel.

The only thing about the 2017 that I wish I had is the steering wheel stereo controls. Other than that, to me it's the same car, and Id rather mod my 2016 than drop the extra dough on a 2017. YMMV.
