I'll give you a real world example, that I track in my Owner's Journal, Post #1. My previous daily driver was a 2001 Chevy Astro. Over 280,000 miles it averaged 17.5MPG. My FR-S over 90,000 miles has averaged 33MPG. That's about a 46% increase in fuel mileage. In the 4.4 years I've owned the FR-S it has saved me an estimated $6,225 in gas, or about $1,414 a year over my previous DD. This is calculated based on the cost of fuel for the FR-S adjusted for the cost of the 87 I would use in the Astro. To get the same savings ($1,414 per year) over the FR-S I would have to get a vehicle that got 48MPG. Not impossible, but probably unlikely for a $2,000 car. Should I be able to do that, it would still take me almost 1.5 years to recoup the cost of the $2,000 car and that assumes it needs no work besides maintenance (also unlikely).

Very true. What I really want as my commuter vehicle, but until I can get it the FR-S is pretty close....
