In other news, the gf gave me the green light on picking up a beater commuter when we move out of town next year so the FRS doesnt get 60 miles a day.
gonna try to pick up something I can beat up and drift. Gonna try to make the buyat les than 2 grand, fix broken parts, and then start removing interior and adding control bits/ easy mods like exhaust. thinking s13. Any other suggestions?

Seems that most folks that buy a beater to drive during the week, do so because of harsh winters. Are you moving out of Mississippi .. ?? Let's see, I reckon a $2,000 s13 would be a beater for sure ...... even in Mississippi. Hmmmm...... $2,000 plus tax&title, plus insurance, battery, tires, brakes, tune up, plugs, mildew & mold removal, fumigation for insects and spiders, seat covers, transmission re-build, replace broken windshield, O2 treatment to kill the smell, ....... just for starters. THEN, you get that puppy running and drive it into work ...... WOW, will your co-workers be impressed; your boss will think you can't afford a better car because all your money is going towards your drinking/gambling problem. That girl at work, that you are sweet on, won't even speak to you, your co-workers will shun you ...... which will throw you into a state of depression. I remember, back-in-the-day, in California, this kid that worked at the pilot plant that was part of the research center, had this pick-up truck he wanted to sell. It was a 1956 Ford step side pickup, painted fire engine red, with chromed reverse rims and a small block Chevy V-8 with a floor shift and Hurst linkage. Yep, flip-flop tape and dingle balls were included. NO RUST! So, the next day, I caught a ride to work, paid the kid $800 and drove that puppy home. My wife WAS NOT impressed! She said "where are going to park that thing ..... surely, NOT in front of our house" .. !! So, I had to build a driveway and gate to hide it in our side yard. So, if you want to be an outcast and go broke doing it ..... just get your beater ..... ![]() Well....... you asked ....... ![]() humfrz |

We won't move out of MS, just out of the town we're in right ow so she doesn't have to drive a whole hours or hour and half to work every day. As for mold and mildew, I'll just pull out most of the interior less weight=better MPG...and just about everything else ![]() Strangely enough, it's better if my car looks crappy at my job. I'm a researcher on a stipend. The FRS looks nicer than it costs and people said some things. I guess I'm supposed to look poor.

![]() Yep, best not to look too successful, they might reduce your stipend. I remember, when I was in graduate school, I rode a 10 speed bicycle about 60 miles a day ...... to keep the miles off my 1948 Chevrolet. NO! ...... it WAS NOT uphill both ways (flat land around The Ohio State University) ...... and NO it wasn't snowing (it was during the summer quarter). That's for those of you picking at my back-in-the-day stories ..... ![]() What type of research project are you working on .. ?? Good luck with your studies! As far a turbo after graduation, I suggest you forget that ...... focus on getting a good, high paying job, so as you can pay lots into social security to help pay for my social security fund, which they have used up, even though I paid into it for the past 50 years .... ![]() TIA for your contribution. humfrz |

A $2000 drift car you say... hope you're good at working on cars. Probably cheaper to drive the frs and eat the extra miles

Overall though, I've never been a big fan of owning a car I feel I can't use every day. That is why I've never been able to pull the trigger on a truly expensive new or collector car. I know I would drive the value right out of it.

But if you collect "investment grade" classic cars, like say a 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti that sells at auction for $30M, you don't drive it because every mile probably drops the value by, oh lets say $10,000. Still, I'd drive the crap out of it. I guess its a good thing I can't even afford admission into the auction, never mind being able to place a bid on it.
