The other solution is to pay $150/mo for uncovered parking or $200/mo to park in a garage...
Had a buddy use one of the folding types and it held up through several Canadian winters. The shape resisted both snow and wind.

There has to be more options like this ^^

I would usually say get the garage, but 200 a month is extortion unless they also detail your car weekly and send you a daily praise email letting you know how good you look today

I was thinking it sounded pretty reasonable for a large city like Chicago.

Hmmm, maybe I'm too quick to assume it shouldn't be any worse than say, Los Angeles... 150 a month to garage an oversized limo in downtown LA was my comparison stick

The real questions is, would you guys really be comfortable parking your car 20 minutes away and not being able to check on it daily without going well out of your way???

I think I could justify spending the $200 if it was actually attached to my building...$200/mo to be in a parking garage where I don't even know if it's there or broken into is a completely different thing.

Likely your car is going to be way too dirty to daily use a car cover if its daily driven in the city. Mainly because grit that gets on the car while driving (including the wheels) then gets into the fabric on your cover, then scratches the paint. People who use car covers need to wash or brush off all of the dirt before putting it on, and is not worth the hassle unless your car is spotless, dirt free all the time.

If I were you, I'd consider finding an apartment in the same neighborhood that doesn't have such shitty parking. Not only are you getting oil and dirt from parking near the train, you're also getting a ton of iron rail dust contaminating the paint. Look into ironx and claybar soon.

But I do like the tent idea as a temporary solution, as long as your landlord is cool with it I say go for it haha! I've almost wanted to do the same thing.

It's funny you say that, I actually spent all day Friday washing, claybar-ing and waxing my car. This is what prompted the immediate call to action as I found plenty of spots where it was a real struggle to get the shit out of my paint.

Found a tent on Amazon that seems to have good ratings for the price so I'll let you guys know how it turns out and if my car is a giant rust bucket in a few months, or worse, crushed by a canopy lol.

What did you find? Link? The more I got thinking about the one my buddy had (as I posted) the more I got to liking the idea for my laneway. If nothing else it would mean way less morning frost scrapping in the winter.

King Canopy 10 x 20 ft. Canopy Carport - 6 Legs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ZGT9HE..._-kw7xbRDXG2ZE

Not at all the same type that you posted, but they also sell accessories to it including sides and a front flap that would keep basically all snow off

Will make sure it is well ventilated. Actually better with all the salt if I can keep the car dryer during the wet thaw periods. And would beat the hell outta scraping for 20 minutes in the morning.

OR ...... Bubba says, you could put an electric blanket (covered with a poncho) over the top of the car ...... and an electric light bulb under the hood ..... (note that Bubba plugs an extension cord into his neighbors mobile home .... ).

Which reminds me of the time, at an apartment complex near Ft Knox, when I asked the apt. mgr. to have the power turned on ...... he said that since it was a Friday, the power company wouldn't be out for another few days.

Well it was August and hot and humid as hell, so I went around back and found the complexes electrical panels, figured out which one was for my apt., took my bayonet and popped the lock off of the panel and "activated" my power supply.

I ran those two big A/C units full blast for 2 months ....... never got a bill ...... thus never paid one ....... HEY - I was a POOR soldier ......
