The first step would be adding whatever number gets 2999 to a nice "clean" number which in this case happens to be 3000. Since it only took 1 step it is your answer right there.

From my understanding (only actually starting reading about common core today)

common core would say to do

2999 + 1 = 3000
3000 + 47 = 3047

48 = answer

Who the heck looks at that and decided to do the stupid way? It's just a pathetic example, and simply means a very different assumed basic knowledge. If you're the kind of person that says numbers aloud as you count up to the next 'clean' number, it sucks. It's a great tool, but isn't universally better. I also haven't tutored math in forever, so the challenges I saw may be partially related to how the folks I worked with learned.

My first wife was a 2nd level soroban practioner and she could do numbers in her head faster than I could punch them into a calculator and could remember important numbers forever. She still couldn't remeber to pay the phone bill, but hey, it had to balance out. It is very important how you as an individual learn and what systems you are exposed to. I explained the way I was taught and she laughed "why would you do math that way, no wonder you suck." She's right. "You're right, honey, let me call everybody and tell them how smart you are. Oh, wait...."

I learned that in the Corps and it has served me well as a "nasty" civilian. I get shit done because I know the value of a solid team. If I lead it I make sure the team has specific goals, instruction, timelines and milestones, the tools to accomplish them and them I GTFO of the way and let them execute. If I am a worker bee, I make sure I have obtained the same, that my team mates are similarly equipped and ensure I and everyone else is pulling together.

This. All day long this. The method of leadership is also why I can spend so much time here really.

Conventional VS Common Core Math

A couple of the parents at work today were complaining about their kids having to use common core math to solve problems in way more steps than traditional math would require. I never had to learn common core math in school but after looking it up I feel like I naturally used some of these techniques anyway and totally see how it is useful and applies to situations where the addition/subtraction/multiplication/division is not something you can easily do in your head in a couple seconds.

Obviously this problem is so simple that it makes common core look unnecessary but the idea is still there of moving up to "clean" numbers to make mental math easier


What I find funny is that this seems to be one of the common "anti-common core" examples I can find but mentally I would have done this in a more similar way to common core.

I would have done +13 instead of the 3 and 10 in different steps but my brain naturally goes towards working up to clean numbers.


I guess this goes back to the saying of you can technically solve any problem with a hammer but it is always nicer to have more tools in the toolbox.

Yes, work is this boring today.

Coming from a junior in Calculus learning forumulas only to learn new ones that do the same thing better the next day, I don't like common core.
I guess this is the feeling you all feel when new stuff comes out but when attempting to help my little brother through what used to be pre-algebra (math 8 or something like that now), he always takes the way I learned it and says that that's not going to be accepted because it's the wrong way. I get that they're trying to help the kids understand it better at an earlier level but at algebra and geometrey it seems really odd to me. Just my 2 cents.
