You might consider asking them what they mean by "the entire rear end is gone". I (we) would like to know. ![]() humfrz |

The guy had no idea. He said with some interesting hand movements that a piece inside the rear end that makes it move went out so they have to replace everything. It had the normal metal shavings on the drain plug

That sounds like the ring or pinion gear shit itself. But that wouldn't have a normal amount of metal shavings, it would have chunks of gear teeth.

The symptoms don't match what the dealer is saying?! If the "the entire rear end is gone", this would most likely make a horrible noise while accelerating (amazing that it's still driveable), and then be relatively more quiet while the clutch pedal is depressed.
Also, if any rear end components lunched themselves, their respective oil baths would look like oily mercury, and the magnetic drain plugs like metal cacti. |

Well they said it wouldn't be making the noise when I picked it up.... soooooooooo if it is I guess they can go from there and fix whatever else it may be. They are on their own dime now. But for now I'm stuck driving a Ford focus.... whoohoo rental cars I'll update as I find out more. They also were going to put in the oem gear oil I told them no thank you that I would bring my own, but I can not find a place in town that sells motul 300 which is what I've seen to be everyone's favorite. Any other suggestions?

Check the Subaru dealership. I know mine sells Motul products. You'll need two quarts.

I think the OEM fluid should be just fine for you? If you do a lot of low speed tight tight turning (parking lots), you could always switch out the differential fluid to Gear300 later. It's a bit more slippery than the OEM stuff and tends to reduce the juddering from the rear end when making tight turns, IIRC. |

They ended up replacing the entire rear differential and she is running like a dream. No crazy noises and it's actually taking off better!!! Whoohoo!!! Went back with oem fluids.

FWIW - a throwout bearing isn't going to make any noise when you are driving. It just floats there until you push the clutch in and engages the pressure plate. When it starts to go, it'll make a metallic whirring noise or chirping when you push the clutch in. When it TOTALLY goes you may hear horrible scraping noise and/or not get any clutch engagement at all - when you push the clutch in.
The TB on my 1990 Miata lasted over 120k miles and my BMW M3 120k miles as a reference. If your car makes ANY kind of noises at speed, and it's NOT related to the engine revs and it's NOT an automatic, then it will most likely be driveline or wheel. Sorry, I didn't see your post sooner but glad the dealer got it right for you! |
