I agree that it will be less expensive as far as maintenance goes, but I think that your situation isn't indicative of the more common lifespan of Evo parts.

I've owned two Evos, and I've had my current Evo IX SE since I bought it new in February 2007. It has 49,800 miles (will be 50,000 after this weekend), and from what I remember:

OEM A046s changed at 25k miles for Z1 Star Specs (which I may change within the next month or so)
Front/rear brake pads changed at 40k (though the fronts still had about 1/3 left)
Original clutch is still going strong
Average mpg is about 21.5 mpg for me, highway is usually 24-25 mpg

So getting 17 mpg and going through two clutches in 78k miles is not normal, unless you absolutely have to do WOT whenever the car is running.

For some reason after 3rd gear, i just didn't get that same power/feeling as i did with 1-3 gears. my 4/5 gear felt sluggish especially going 90mph+. Actually, sluggish may be the wrong word, I would say acceleration was not as powerful.

My opinion may change as i get more used to and more famliar with the car, but since the FR-S has a smoother delivery of power throughout the gears, I gave it the edge. And you never know, the evo may in fact be more powerful in those gears, but I just didn't like how the power delivery wasn't consistent in those gears.

It's all relative. I can't confirm until I drive an FR-S/BRZ myself, but I think part of your view may just be comparing the acceleration in the higher gears to the lower gears, rather than comparing it to how the same thing "feels" in the FR-S (which frankly isn't easy to do either with two completely different cars). Obviously the AWD will take away from its higher-end acceleration (which is why SRT-4s can hang from a roll, though any car's acceleration slows down as the car gets faster), but like I said earlier, I'd think it would still have the edge with that big of a difference in engine output. But if the FR-S had 240+ hp, I might not have thought twice.

Evo is a different beast. I just bought my FR-S but I kept my Evo 9 MR. Best of both worlds. No comparison between the two. When I just wanna go blasting I'll take the MR. Someone posts about how much fun the FR-S is to drive and I totally agree. I keep making up errands to go take mine out.

I had an Evo VIII previously. I miss it frequently as I LOVED that turbo and AWD.


But how many cars can provide the balance, looks, and handling of the FR-S while also having just the right amount of power to allow you to really wring it out without going into warp 5.

I did the exact same thing, my Evo will now become my dedicated track car, and the FR-S becomes the daily.

I think if you are going to AutoX the car, I would choose to use the FR-S as the turning radius on the Evo makes it harder on tight technical layouts, however on a road course, Evo hands down. I make porshe and corvette owners look really silly in my Evo.

As far as power goes, Evo hands down...
Handling, this is a little more personal taste, with the Evo you can somewhat hamfist it and it will do the job, however with the FR-s you really have to maintain your momentum.

Braking Evo, hands down no comparison...

Daily driveability, FR-s, you don't have to go to the gym to use the clutch, smaller wheelbase makes parking lots and u turns easier to navigate.

At the end of the day, I couldn't swap my Evo for the FR-s so know I have both.

Yeah, if possible, have both.

The Evo really is very different to the FR-S. The Evo has more power, more traction and grip, has more feel/feedback (for the VIII and IX), and can comfortably seat 4. The FR-S has virtually no body roll, is more economical, more comfortable, and more linear/smooth/predictable. The FR-S is more fun in that you can get the rear to slide around a bit whereas the Evo is more fun in its power and grip.

It would be a tough call to go with one or the other but as Turbowned said, getting over 100k in the Evo probably won't be good on the wallet. Since 100k in my Eclipse GSX, I've spent over 10,000 dollars in maintenance/repairs. So it would probably be wise to either retire it to backup/snow duty or trade it in soon.
