Should I trade my evo fir a frs
 

I have a 2003 evo with 88000 miles and a few gasket problems with it but overall I love it's power. But at the same time I use to own a 1985 ae86 in sr5 trim which I completely revamped from carb to 4age and repainted and had jdm front and back bumper covers. Also had many mods in the engine I rebuilt. I became a father and had to let it go. And now when I see the fr-s I become a kid again and really want this vehicle especially after I test drove it. Am I an idiot to want to get rid of my evo to own a fr-s. All jokes aside I have watched every review on this car and can't stop wanting it. I know I will miss my evos power but the looks and balance of this car really makes me not give a F.

I used to have a 2005 evo and I'll tell you that the power difference is massive between the FR-S and evo. Handling is also very different because you're going from an AWD to RHD. Obviously they have fundamental differences so it's hard to compare, but I'll try to give you my honest opinion.

Looks - FR-S
Handling - Tie
Power - Evo (unless FR-S gets some sort of FI)
Acceleration - Evo (RWD has nothing on AWD off a flat start)
4th & 5th gear acceleration - FR-S
Interior - Tie (leaning towards FR-S though)
Brakes - Evo (obviously Brembo wins)
Tires - Evo (stock comparison)
Clutch life - FR-S (AWD clutches wear out too fast)

I had a 2003 evo 8 as well with about 86k miles when I traded it in. Honestly I miss it, but I don't regret trading it in. I love this car. It's so much fun to drive. But that's just my opinion.

Keep the evo

As a former 2004 Evo VIII owner, I highly recommend the trade! Don't get me wrong...I loved my Evo...but the FR-S is on a different level of fun. Sure your down power, but what astounds me about the FR-S is how damn good it handles, on stock (pretty crappy) tires, and the overall feel of the car. Its really tough to put into words.

The cost of ownership is better with the FR-S. I would chew through tires & brakes like no ones business in the Evo...and I got about 17mpg. I also went through 2 clutches in the 78k miles I had it.

Just get the damn FR-S. You're going to come on this forum and ask which to choose? Obviously, all our responses are going to be bias to the FR-S, even the previous evo owners such as myself and luscious.

No. Fix the Evo. You'll miss it dearly. However, do test-drive the FR-S/BRZ.

Glad to get input from someone who has actually driven both, but I'm curious about you giving the edge to the FR-S when it comes to acceleration in the higher gears. Exactly how different is it? I'd have thought that with that big of a difference in engine output that at higher speeds, the Evo would still have the edge.

I agree that it will be less expensive as far as maintenance goes, but I think that your situation isn't indicative of the more common lifespan of Evo parts.

I've owned two Evos, and I've had my current Evo IX SE since I bought it new in February 2007. It has 49,800 miles (will be 50,000 after this weekend), and from what I remember:

OEM A046s changed at 25k miles for Z1 Star Specs (which I may change within the next month or so)
Front/rear brake pads changed at 40k (though the fronts still had about 1/3 left)
Original clutch is still going strong
Average mpg is about 21.5 mpg for me, highway is usually 24-25 mpg

So getting 17 mpg and going through two clutches in 78k miles is not normal, unless you absolutely have to do WOT whenever the car is running.
