I've known of Lyons for as long as I have been driving now. A friend of mine got ripped off by them and I've realized that all tow truck drivers are full of shit. The only tow truck drivers you can sort of rely on are those you get with CAA or AAA and even then, GIVE THEM A DESTINATION.

My car was held hostage for over 3 months, 2 years ago after an accident on the 400. The rental car company was in on the action as well. The only thing that saved my ass was calling the 1-888 number for my insurance company's 24 hour hotline before the tow truck hooked up to the car (i had a gut feeling) . The agent assured me that everything would be fine, It wasn't. My insurance company knew that they were in a jam when i refused to return the rental without getting my car back. In the end it was cheaper to write my 3 month old car off and cut me a cheque. I now have CAA , They will be the only tow truck touching my car and it will only be dropped in my driveway. The insurance company can take it from there. Lessons learnt, Accident chasers are vultures.

The car had about 5k damage. The costs for towing, storage , rental car were around 10k....... and they hadn't touched the car 90 days in. It's a game they play dodging the adjusters in order to collect as much storage as possible. Writing it off was the only way to legally remove the car from that body shop. I had tried to take the car myself 3 weeks in , I mean its mine right? Cops wanted nothing to do with it. I personally know good, honest tow truck drivers , those guys don't chase accidents. My advice is to call caa to remove the car from the road and then have the insurance company make all the arrangements for tow , body shop etc. If I hadn't called the 1888 number I would be screwed. What should have been a 2 week Repair took up almost 5 months of my life , Never again.

Damn, my fam SUV got towed a while back. Luckily we gave a destination and nothing shady happened.
Now I have free road side assistance (CAA basically) with my BRZ, which was included in the package. |

I used to work for a tow service and one particular shop in that town would give us $50 if we brought a car in to them. If I was told to bring a car to them I would and collect the $50, but a lot of other guys towed every car they picked up to that shop if not given a different destination. The shop was a good one so it wasn't too big of a deal, but I know this sort of thing happens in other places and I'm sure some of the other shops are not so good.
If you need to be towed, do your research beforehand and find a place on your own, you can't always depend on the tow guy 1) to be honest 2) to have any clue what places are good and which suck. Tow operators just tow the cars in, they don't see what happens in the shop. They may hear stories about places and may have personal experience but generally they just drop cars off. |
